Netflix nabbed a double win at the 2018 Art Directors Guild Awards this weekend, as the streaming giant’s production design teams were celebrated.
The opening episode of Black Mirror Season 4, USS Callister, won for Best TV Movie or Limited Series, with Joel Collins’ production design meticulously rendering the fantastical world of the titular starship. Wrestling comedy series GLOW, meanwhile, won Best Half Hour Single-Camera Series, thanks to its three episodes Pilot, The Wrath of Kuntar and The Dusty Spur, as production designer Todd Fjelsted brought to life the period world inhabited by the series’ larger-than-life characters.
Other TV winners include Will & Grace, which trumped Netflix’s The Ranch to Best Multi-Camera Series, and The Handmaid’s Tale, which beat American Gods, Mr. Robot and Twin Peaks to win Best One-Hour Contemporary Single-Camera Series. Game of Thrones was crosed Best One-Hour Period or Fantasy Single-Camera Series, beating Mindhunter, The Crown, A Series of Unfortunate Events and Stranger Things.
On the big screen, Blade Runner 2049, Logan and The Shape of Water led the live-action awards, winning Fantasy Film, Contemporary Film and Period Film respectively. The ADG also introduced its first award for an Animated Feature, which went to Disney/Pixar’s Coco.
