Netflix is heading back to France for a new romantic comedy series.
The untitled show, which is based on an original idea from British writer Chris Lang, is set in modern day Paris and follows a group of friends who rally around their perpetually single girlfriend, Elsa, who can’t seem to figure out why she is so unlucky in love. In a misguided attempt to build back Elsa’s confidence, they hire a male escort to renew Elsa’s faith in dating, relationships and finding love.
The eight-episode, half-hour series is directed by Noémie Saglio (Connasse, Princesse des coeurs) and French executive producers Anne Thomopoulos (Rome; Versailles) and François Florentiny. Lang serves as executive producer and head writer, along with Julien Teisseire as additional writer. Saglio will also participate in the writing.
“I’m very happy to present my vision of French humour on such an innovative platform. Netflix gives creative freedom to writers and directors to express themselves from beginning to end – with this show in particular, the freedom to showcase people in their thirties as realistic and sweet as they are funny” says Saglio. “Also in my thirties, this is the occasion for me to speak about all the ways to be a woman in today’s world.”
“We could not have found a better partner than Netflix to develop this romantic comedy and we could not have wished for a better place for Chris Lang’s original idea to be produced,” say Thomopoulos and Florentiny.
“We are very excited to collaborate with such a great creative team. Noémie Saglio is the perfect director to helm this playful, poignant exploration of friendship and love in modern Paris.”
“This show is a fun and modern romantic story that will bring viewers into the energy of today’s Paris,” says Erik Barmack, Vice President of International Originals at Netflix. “In this series, Noémie Saglio will be infusing a fresh eye on French romance, and we are excited to work with her as well as with such talented executive producers and writers, for what is to be our next French original series.”
The series will be produced by UnRATED Studios and follows the production of other Netflix French originals, including The Eddy, Osmosis, Marseille and Gad Elmaleh’s stand up comedies. It will premiere on Netflix in 2018.
