Netflix and the BBC were the big winners at last night’s 2019 Golden Globes, as Roma, Killing Eve, A Very English Scandal and more took home top prizes.
Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma was crowned Best Foreign Language Picture, placing the streaming giant’s original film once again near the front of the award contenders pack. Cuaron also took home the Best Director prize, beating out competition from Spike Lee (BlackKkKlansman) and Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born).
On the small screen, Netflix also came out on top, with Chuck Lorre’s The Kominsky Method also a surprise winner: the sitcom, which stars Alan Arkin and Michael Douglas, won Best Actor in a TV Comedy for the Wall Street star and also bagged the Best TV Comedy prize.
Best TV Drama went to The Americans in its final season, trumping rivalry from Bodyguard, Homecoming, Pose and Killing Eve. The BBC’s series, though, still rose to the occasion, with Richard Madden winning Best Actor in a TV Drama for Bodyguard, Ben Whishaw winning Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for A Very English Scandal and, most notably, Sandra Oh winning Best Actress in a TV Drama for BBC One and BBC Three’s Killing Eve. The Beeb is also the exclusive UK home of FX series, with The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story winning twice: once for Best Actor (Darren Criss) and once for Best Limited Series.
Amazon was notably less successful, but continued its winning streak in the comedy field, with Rachel Brosnahan bagging Best Actress for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It was otherwise a night for the Patricias, with Patricia Clarkson named Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for HBO’s Sharp Objects, and Patricia Arquette named Best Actress in a Limited Series for Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora.
On the feature film side of things, Roma found surprise competition in Bohemian Rhapsody, which won Best Drama and Best Actor for Rami Malek, while Green Book was named Best Comedy, both unexpected wins. Indeed, Green Book won two more times, once for Best Screenplay and once for Mahershala Ali’s Best Supporting Role. Christian Bale was crowned Best Actor for Vice, but Regina King beat his co-star Amy Adams to take home Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk. Olivia Colman won Best Actress in a Comedy for The Favourite, while Glenn Close won Best Actress in a Drama for The Wife. The latter meant that Lady Gaga didn’t get the much-hyped gong for her turn in A Star Is Born, but did win Best Original Song for Shallow.
