Murder Mystery and Black Mirror lead June Netflix streaming

Murder Mystery and Black Mirror are leading the way on Netflix UK this June, with both topping the streaming giant’s weekly most popular chart.
Netflix’s data is being released as a new experiment to see if users find the regular round-up a useful indication of what’s trending. The figures, of course, should be taken with a pinch of salt: Netflix’s count for a “viewer” is anyone who completes at least 70 per cent of one episode of a TV series or 70 per cent of a film – an indication, perhaps, of how much time people typically spend watching a single title on Netflix, or of how value attention spans have become in a competitive online age. Nonetheless, they highlight how much of an impact each new release makes, as word of mouth builds among subscribers.
Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology was the most popular TV show on Netflix UK for the second week in a row, ahead of Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us. The latter has risen up the charts in recent weeks, as word of mouth spreads. Word of mouth apparently hasn’t been enough to boost viewing of What/If, Renee Zellwegger’s new thriller, which jumped up the charts last week, but has since fallen to sixth in Netflix UK’s most popular TV series – ahead of Jessica Jones’ third and final season and young adult drama Trinkets, both new this week.
For Netflix original films, though, new releases appear to make their biggest impact early on, with Murder Mystery hopping straight in at number one – Netflix has said that worldwide it’s been watched by more than 30 million accounts in its opening weekend, a new record for a Netflix original movie. I Am Mother, an indie sci-fi snapped up by Netflix at Sundance also enjoyed a strong opening weekend, debuting at number three in the most popular films and number five overall – just behind Despicable Me 3.
