MUBI to release Matthias & Maxime on disc this October

Streaming service MUBI is once again dipping its toes into physical media waters, with Matthias & Maxime heading to DVD and Blu-ray this October.
Receiving its premiere in Competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Xavier Dolan’s latest film is a quietly understated coming-of-age story as two long-time friends grapple with their sexualities. Two childhood best friends are asked to share a kiss for the purposes of a student short film. Soon, a lingering doubt sets in, confronting both of them with their preferences, threatening the brotherhood of their social circle, and, eventually, changing their lives.
The film stars Gabriel D’Almeida Freitas (Hubert et Fanny) and Harris Dickinson (Beach Rats) as well as Dolan’s regular collaborator Anne Dorval (Mommy, 14 Days, 12 Nights), Pier-Luc Funk (Flashwood), and Dolan himself.
The global curated streaming service acquired the rights to the latest from the Tom at the Farm and Mommy director earlier this year, releasing it online last month.
“Xavier Dolan’s sensitive portrayal of male friendship and unspoken longing is an honest and compelling tale of self-discovery,” we wrote in our review, which hailed the film as a “resounding return to form”.
Now, MUBI has confirmed that the film will be released on disc on 19th October. It follows a number of other MUBI titles to be given a physical media release, including Bacurau, Beanpole, Under the Silver Lake, Border, Ema and Suspiria.

Dolan said at the time: “I subscribed to The Auteurs/MUBI more than a decade ago when I moved into my first apartment. I discovered incredible work on that platform and it’s an honour to have them show the film. I think my 18 year-old self would be pretty impressed.”
Efe Cakarel, founder and CEO of MUBI, added: “Xavier Dolan is one of the finest filmmakers in contemporary cinema. We are huge fans of his work and Matthias & Maxime is a beautifully written film that exudes his signature style. We can’t wait to show it on MUBI this summer.”
Now, we’ve got a confirmed released date when we can see it, with the film set to debut on MUBI’s streaming platform on 28th August in the UK and Ireland, as well as other territories.
