Issa Rae is teaming up with David Heyman to produce a new adaptation of The Ghost in the Machine for Netflix.
Tanya Smith’s memoir, which will be published in 2021, will chronicle the life story of Smith, who rose from a middle-class girl on the North Side of Minneapolis to become “one of the single biggest threats to the entire United States banking system” (according to the FBI). From her creation of a wire fraud scheme to two prison escapes and a final 13-year sentence, the book has been promptly snapped up by Netflix to turn into a feature film.
Rae, who is known for her HBO series Insecure, has recently exec-produced romantic drama The Photograph and Netflix rom-com The Lovebirds. She will exec-produce the project through her Issa Rae Productions, with Montrel McKay and Sara Rastogi overseeing. David Heyman, who most recently worked on Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and Marriage Story, will produce through his Heyday Films, with Jillian Share and Jeffrey Clifford overseeing.
