Israeli romantic comedy Beauty and the Baker has been bought by Amazon Prime Video.
The series, which premiered in its home country in 2013, first arrived on UK TV screens last year, thanks to Walter Presents. All 4’s online platform for foreign-language released the series in September, with the show going on to become one of our top TV series of 2016.
The Hebrew-language series follows a young baker from a Tel Aviv suburb, who still lives with his parents but falls for a famous model after a chance encounter and a messy break-up with his ex.
“He’s up to his armpits in pitta. She’s heading to Hollywood. It’s like Notting Hill with naan bread (sort of). You’ll love it,” we wrote in our review. ” Like any good romance, there are some obstacles for our happy couple to overcome – every time you think that the path is clear for them to get together, something else gets in the way. The result deftly manages to celebrate the couple’s cute affair without becoming too sugar-coated, while the well developed supporting ensemble add real substance to go with the surface gloss. You’ll be eight episodes in before you know it, but as Phil Collins says, you can’t hurry love. And this delectable rom-com deserves to be savoured, every last morsel.”
Now, Amazon has bought the subscription streaming rights to the show from Keshet International. Called “The Baker and The Beauty” in the US, the show will be released on Amazon Prime Video across its 200+ countries and territories.
The deal covers the first two seasons of the show, with Season 2 currently airing in Israel.
“Owing to its totally universal appeal and uncompromising high production values, The Baker and the Beauty has found itself another new home on one of the world’s most prestigious content platforms, Amazon Prime Video,” Keren Shahar, COO and president of distribution at Keshet International, said in a statement.
The deal, which was brokered by Keshet International senior sales manager Rose Hughes, follows a recent agreement between Amazon and Keshet for BBC’s The A Word, which will be an Amazon exclusive in the USA.
