Summer is here and while you may be planning a seaside getaway or a festival-filled weekend, we’ll be locking our doors to keep out the sunshine and clutching our TV and an electric fan. Why? Because even when school is out, Netflix is still hard at work.

Kids will be kept entertained over the holidays by Dawn of the Croods and The Adventures of Puss in Boots: Season 5, as well as Netflix’s groundbreaking second interactive TV special, which allows viewers to choose-their-own path through an episode of Buddy Thunderstruck. Adults, meanwhile, will have just enough to balance out their Game of Thrones watching with lighter entertainment: July sees the arrival of computer game adaptation Castlevania, new comedy series Friends from College, and the return of both Last Chance U and Zoo. Also on the way are two stunning Sundance hits, The Incredible Jessica James and Chasing Coral, new Jason Bateman drama Ozark and the sophomore season of the thrilling Shooter.

Asian Provocateur: Season 1 – 1st July

Romesh Ranganathan is the latest to tackle the now-prolific genre of Comedian Travels Abroad. But the usual fish-out-of-water schtick is given a personal touch by the fact that he’s heading to his parents’ homeland of Sri Lanka – because his mum tells him to – to meet his Uncle Thiru and learn about his heritage. Ranganathan’s a naturally funny guy, something that the format allows to come through without beating you over the head with it.

Birdman of Alcatraz – 1st July

Burt Lancaster stars in John Frankenheimer’s prison drama about the fascinating story of prison inmate Robert Stroud.

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride – 1st July

With all three seasons of the BBC’s cracking update of Sherlock already available, the New Year’s Day special The Abominable Bride arrives on Netflix UK.

Don’t Knock Twice – 3rd July

This spooky indie horror from the director of The Machine is as much as about a moving mother-daughter relationship as scares. But don’t worry: there are plenty of those too.

The Standups: Season 1 – 4th July

Comedians Nate Bargatze, Deon Cole, Fortune Feimster, Nikki Glaser, Dan Soder and Beth Stelling deliver sets in this new original stand-up series.

The Breakfast Club – 6th July

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – 7th July

Tom Cruise has never looked younger in this sequel that proves practical stunts, spy hijinks and Simon Pegg are a combo with as much magic as ever. Rebecca Ferguson, though, steals the whole show as enigmatic agent Ilsa Faust.

Castlevania: Season 1 – 7th July

This new Netflix animated series is inspired by the classic video game, which follows the last surviving member of a disgraced clan fights to save Eastern Europe from Dracula. As you do.

Dawn of the Croods: Season 4 – 7th July

When an ailment threatens Grug’s position as valley leader, Eep fills in. A star-crossed romance forces the Croods and the Broods to call a truce.

Degrassi: Next Class: Season 4 – 7th July

Grace finds romance. Yael faces an identity crisis. Frankie enters into an unconventional relationship. Saad struggles to be understood by his peers.

Before I Fall – 7th July

Forced to continually relive the day she dies in a car crash, a privileged high schooler must unravel the cosmic mystery of her suddenly looping life.

Luna Petunia: Season 2 – 7th July

Luna’s adventures in Amazia continue as she explores wonders like the Jelly Jungle, makes new friends and finds fun ways to learn and grow.

Blair Witch – 9th July

After discovering a video showing what he believes to be his missing sister, a young man and his friends venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mystery of her disappearance. Is it connected to the legend of the Blair Witch? Given the title of Adam “You’re Next” Wingard’s latest entry in the franchise, we’ll leave you to work out that bit.

The Little Prince: Season 1 – 11th July

This 2010 stereoscopic animated series is based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic novel.

Friends From College: Season 1 – 14th July

As they face down their forties, a group of friends who met at Harvard experiences a range of success – or lack thereof – in this comedy series, which features Cobie Smulders and Keegan-Michael Key.

Chasing Coral – 14th July

An ad executive teams up with marine biologists and camera designers to capture evidence that climate change is destroying coral reefs in this breathtaking documentary, from the team that brought us the Oscar-nominated masterpiece Chasing Ice (also on Netflix UK).

Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile (Interactive) – 14th July

Netflix’s second interactive TV special, this Buddy Thunderstruck story sees Buddy and Darnell ready to try out a big ol’ pile of crazy new ideas – and you get to choose which half-baked schemes make the cut.

To the Bone – 14th July

Snapped up by Netflix at Sundance, this indie comedy-drama follows an anorexic as she goes on asometimes funny, sometimes harrowing journey of self-discovery after entering a group home run by an unconventional doctor.

Zoo: Season 2 – 17th July

CBS’ hilariously improbably thriller returns for a second run of sinister animals, bad dialogue and all manner of enjoyably cheesy entertainment. Read our reasons why you should put this on your watchlist immediately.

Suits: Season 7 – 13th July

After Dave dropped Suits last month, Netflix has stepped in to snap up the rights, meaning no more waiting for new episodes of the US legal drama: Season 7 premieres on Netflix in the UK weekly from today, with new episodes every Thursday. Season 6 has also arrived on the same day.

Aditi Mittal: Things They Wouldn’t Let Me Say – 18th July

One of the first women to perform stand-up comedy in India, Aditi Mittal opens up about life as a woman in her country in this new special.

Last Chance U: Season 2 – 21st July

Netflix’s gripping sports documentary series returns. Buddy, Brittany and a group of new and returning EMCC players begin a new season while coping with the publicity Season 1 brought to the team.

Ozark: Season 1 – 21st July

In this dark, dangerous series, a family struggles after moving to an Ozarks resort community when they’re thrust into a world of dirty money.

Joe Mande’s Award-Winning Comedy Special – 25th July

Stand-up comic Joe Mande aims for critical adulation with this special that covers dating shows, “Shark Tank,” Jewish summer camp and much more.

The Incredible Jessica James – 28th July

Another Netflix Sundance purchase, Jim Strouse’s astonishing, uplifting comedy follows a struggling New York City playwright, who burned by a bad breakup, makes an unlikely connection with a divorced app designer (Chris O’Dowd) she meets on a blind date. O’Dowd is funny and charming, but this is Jessica Williams’ show and she steals it with a bubbly, sincere performance that avoids every cliche in the book to create a tiny, character-driven masterpiece.

Daughters of Destiny: Season 1 – 28th July

Oscar-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth follows a group of young people from India’s most impoverished families as they strive for a brighter future.

It Follows – 29th July

Imagine someone walking towards you. Not very scary, is it? Wait until you see It Follows. David Robert Mitchell’s horror thriller follows Jay (Maika Monroe), who finds herself on a date gone terrifyingly wrong, when she wakes up post-sex strapped to a chair and is told that something is going to try and kill her. Why? We don’t know. Who? We don’t know that either. What we do know is that this entity will continue following her until it catches her and shuffles her off her mortal coil. It’s clever. It’s unconventional. And it’s very, very creepy.

Shooter: Season 2 – 19th July

Although one battle is over, another one is just beginning for Bob Lee Swagger, who’s about to find himself in the middle of another dangerous plot. Season 2 premieres in the USA on 18th July, so expect Episode 1 to land on 19th July, with episodes then arriving weekly within 24 hours of their US broadcast.

Rick and Morty: Season 3, Episode 1 – 30th July

Season 3 of Rick and Morty will be arriving exclusively on Netflix UK alongside its US broadcast this summer. Episode 1 (which originally aired in April in the USA) will premiere on 30th July, with new episodes released every Sunday, one week after their US broadcast. For more information, click here.
