The 2022 Hellraiser remake is now available to watch online in the UK, with the film getting a surprise digital release on Halloween.
The film, which is a remake of the classic 1987 horror by Clive Barker, is based on his 1986 novella, The Hellbound Heart, and is the 11th entry in the Hellraiser franchise, which centres around a puzzle box that opens a gateway to a Hell-like realm – and to the now-iconic nail-studded villain, who has come to be known as Pinhead. After two sequels in which Doug Badley did not take on the role of Pinhead, this new entry in the franchise serves as a reboot of the whole thing.
Directed by David Bruckner (The Ritual, The Night House), 2022’s Hellraiser follows Riley McKendry, a young woman struggling with addiction who comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box – unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.
Sense8 star Jamie Clayton takes on the role of Pinhead, here called the Priest, the leader of the Cenobites, while Odessa A’zion (Fam, Grand Army) stars as Riley. They are joined by a cast that includes Goran Visnjic, Kit Clarke, Adam Faison and Drew Starkey.
The film is produced by Spyglass Media Group and is written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, who reunited with Bruckner and producers David S Goyer and Keith Levine, after they all worked on The Night House. Clive Barker is also a producer on the project, which serves to give it some kind of blessing from the Hellraiser creator.
The film debuted at Fantastic Fest in September before it was released on Hulu in the USA in October. Paramount stepped in to distribute the film in the UK, taking the decision to make the film available to buy and rent on digital platforms from 31st October.
