Game of Thrones animated series in the works at HBO Max

Let it never be said that HBO hasn’t tried to get the maximum amount of TV possible out of Game of Thrones. Since the fantasy epic, based on George RR Martin’s novels, concluded in 2019, the cable giant has been looking to continue the franchise. Now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that a new project is in early development for HBO Max – an animated show.
“Meetings with writers are underway” for what will be an “adult-leaning” project, sources told THR. HBO Max hasn’t confirmed any deals and the whole thing may – like the Naomi Watts-starring Game of Thrones prequel – never get off the ground at all, but Variety has also confirmed the reports, With Netflix expanding on such franchises as Jurassic World, Fast & Furious and Kong: Skull Island with animated shows, and with Disney+ making the most of its own brands, such as Star Wars and Marvel, it is no surprise that HBO’s new streaming service should be looking at similar efforts with its own small screen universe.
Indeed, reports this week also arrived of another prequel based on Tales of Dunk and Egg. While, like the animated series, there are no confirmed writers attached, they indicate just how many resources at HBO are going into finding ways to build out the Game of Thrones world.
Production on the confirmed live-action prequel, House of the Dragon, will begin this spring, with a screen debut expected in 2022.
