Full list: 2015 Oscar winners and where to watch them online

Birdman, not Boyhood. That was the main message to take home from the 2015 Oscars, as Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s meta showbiz comedy swooped in to steal both Best Picture and Best Director away from Richard Linklater’s 12-years-in-the-making favourite.
Birdman ruled the roost with four prizes in total, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography for its seemingly single-take visuals. The Grand Budapest Hotel enjoyed equal success, going home with four gongs in its luggage, including Best Score and, in celebration of its unique Wes Anderson style, Best Make-Up, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Whiplash also emerged as a surprise victor, taking home not just the expected Best Supporting Actor for J.K. Simmons but also Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Elsewhere, things were more predictable, with Eddie Redmayne unstoppable in his course to win Best Actor for The Theory of Everything, Julianne Moore winning Best Actress for Still Alice and Patricia Arquette winning Best Supporting Actress for Boyhood.
Linklater, though, ended up empty-handed, with Boyhood only picking up one prize for Patricia’s performance. Nonetheless, with Selma picking up Best Song for Glory, each of the Best Picture nominees won something last night, a relatively rare occurrence, suggesting a more diverse spread of appreciation than the original list of nominees indicated. (“Tonight, we honour the best and whitest,” quipped host Neil Patrick Harris at the start of the evening. “Sorry, the best and brightest.”)
The same can be said of being able to stream this year’s crop of contenders, with 70% of the prizes going to films already available on VOD, or soon to be available on VOD (a special shout-out to British flick The Phone Call, which won Best Live Action Short and is already available on iTunes and Vimeo). That figure, though, doesn’t include Edward Snowden documentary CitizenFour, which will be broadcast on Channel 4 and 4oD this Wednesday – the first major chance viewers in the UK will have to see it.
