First look: Beau Willimon’s The First

Beau Willimon’s Hulu drama The First arrives on UK TV later this year, and we’ve got our first look at the show’s cast in action.
A co-production between Hulu and Channel 4, the latest series from the creator of Netflix’s House of Cards and the acclaimed play The Ides of March promises political commentary aplenty, even as the writer switches up his usual genre for science fiction. The programme is set in the new future and follows the first human mission to Mars exploring the challenges of taking the first steps toward interplanetary colonisation. The story focuses not only on the astronauts, but also on their families and loved ones, as well as the ground team on Earth.
Willimon serves as executive producer alongside his producing partner Jordan Tappis under their Westward Productions banner. They have amassed a star-studded cast, led by Sean Penn in his firs TV role, and Natascha McElhone (who left Netflix’s Designated Survivor for the role) as visionary aerospace magnate Laz Ingram (Natascha McElhone).
The First will premiere on Hulu in the US and on Channel 4 in the UK and Ireland later this year. Here are the first images from the series:
