Emmys 2024: Shogun, The Bear lead nominations
David Farnor | On 20, Jul 2024
The 2024 Emmy nominations have officially been unveiled, and Shogun and The Bear are top of the menu.
The awards, which are now in their 76th year, have long been a barometer of success in the TV world, still dividing shows into categories – comedy, drama, limited series, and so on – in a landscape that has shifted dramatically in a digital age. In recent years, Netflix and HBO/Max have battled it out for dominance of the awards. The streaming giant won out this year, with 107 nods ahead of HBO/Max’s 91 (a reverse of last year, when HBO/Max had 127 and Netflix had 103). But it’s FX that has really stolen the show, with 91 nominations – the highest number it has ever received. That’s in no small part thanks to two big hitters: Shogun, an old-school period epic with 25 nods, and The Bear, a half-hour culinary sensation that has enjoyed popularity primarily through Hulu in the USA.
The Bear belonging in the comedy category is a dubious and controversial situation, but it set a new record for the most nods in that category in one year, with 23 (topping 30 Rock’s record of 22 in 2009). Other most-nominated shows include Only Murders in the Building (21), True Detective: Night Country (19), The Crown (18), Saturday Night Live (17), Fallout, Hacks, The Morning Show, Mr and Mrs Smith (all 16), Fargo (15), Ripley (13) and Baby Reindeer and Palm Royale (both 11).
The Crown, Baby Reindeer and Ripley fuelled Netflix’s success, with Amazon Prime Video’s lower haul of 37 relying primarily on two shows: Fallout and Mr and Mrs Smith. Apple TV+, on the other hand, continues to build its clout and reputation with a spread of shows – including Lessons in Chemistry, The Morning Show, Palm Royale and Slow Horses – taking its total nominations up from 50 last year to 70 this year.
In the Best Drama category, Shogun will compete will The Crown, Fallout, The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, Mr & Mrs Smith, Slow Horses and 3 Body Problem. In the Best Comedy category, The Bear will face off with Abbott Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, Reservation Dogs and What We Do in the Shadows. In the Best Limited Series category, Baby Reindeer will be up against Fargo, Lessons in Chemistry, Ripley and True Detective: Night Country.
The Primetime Emmy winners will be announced on Sunday 15th September, with the Creative Arts Emmy Awards handed out the weekend before.
