This October, Netflix is bringing the story of Rudy Ray Moore to the screen in Dolemite Is My Name – and star Eddie Murphy is on hand in a new teaser to give us the oral history of the iconic entertainment pioneer.
The film follows the larger than life comedian, musician, singer, actor, and film producer in the 1970’s, who, when he couldn’t get work in Hollywood, simply created his own – including the most well-known Blaxploitation film of all time, Dolemite.
A pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s phenomenon, Dolemite Is My Name promises laughs, insight and crowdpleasing performances from a cast that includes Wesley Snipes, Mike Epps and Keegan-Michael Key.
The film had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, with a release in select UK cinemas planned for 11th October, before it streams worldwide on Netflix on 25th October. Here’s the video:

Eddie Murphy teams with Netflix for Rudy Ray Moore biopic
16th June
Eddie Murphy is teaming up with Netflix for Dolemite Is My Name!, a Rudy Ray Moore biopic.
The film, based on the real life story of the comedian and film producer, stars Eddie Murphy as Moore. He’s joined by a impressive cast of big hitters, including Wesley Snipes (Blade trilogy, The Expendables 3), Craig Robinson (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Office), Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Mike Epps (Next Friday, The Hangover) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Office Christmas Party).
Written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, The People vs. Larry Flynt, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson), the biopic charts the story of the irreverent Rudy Ray Moore, a “larger than life” musician, singer, actor, and producer in the 1970s. When he couldn’t get work in Hollywood, he simply created his own – including Dolemite, which went on to become the most well-known Blaxploitation film of all time. Snipes, who last appeared in Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq, an Amazon original film, will play D’Urville Martin, who ended up directing Dolemite.
Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox are producing, alongside Murphy, with Michael Beugg on board as Executive Producer.
The project is directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow), with filming now underway in and around Los Angeles. It will be released by Netflix in 2019.
