“You miss it, don’t you?” That’s the sound of Young Wallander being drawn back into the murky world of crime in Season 2 of Netflix’s detective drama.
Based on Henning Mankell’s best-selling Kurt Wallander novels, the prequel is written by Chris Lunt and Mike Walker and traces the early stages of Wallander’s career, fresh out of police academy. Adam Pålsson (Moscow Noir, Don’t Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves) will return as Kurt Wallander for Season 2, alongside Leanne Best (Black Mirror), Ellise Chappell (Poldark) and Yasen Atour (The Witcher: Season 2). They will be joined by Edun (Merlin) as Superintendent Samuel Osei and Hammond (EastEnders) as Roberta Modin. Other new cast members include Josef Davies (The King), Lewis Mackinnon (Doctors) and Kim Adis (Get Even).
The six-part Season 2 will see Wallander found adrift and uncertain of the future following his exit from the police force. An opportunity to re-join the Major Crimes Unit arises when a new Superintendent, Samuel Osei, takes on the leadership. Wallander accepts the offer and is tasked with what seems to be a straightforward case: a hit-and-run outside a nightclub. However, when the victim is found to be connected to an infamous murder case handled by Frida Rask eight years ago, Wallander quickly suspects that there is more to this incident than meets the eye. Determined to uncover the truth, he refuses to back off – even when the investigation leads him to the door of those who could end his career in a heartbeat.
Is it possible to go back after you thought you’d left everything behind? Find out when Young Wallander: Killer’s Shadow premieres on 17th February. Here’s a trailer:

Young Wallander: Henning Mankell prequel series in the works at Netflix
29th November 2018
Netflix has ordered Young Wallander, a new original series based on Henning Mankell’s best-selling Kurt Wallander novels.
Over the last two decades Mankell’s best-selling Kurt Wallander novels have served as source material for several beloved TV series and films in Sweden as well as in the UK, where Kenneth Branagh played the sleuth (pictured above). Now, Netflix is going back to the iconic Scandi noir detective’s roots.
Set in contemporary Sweden, the prequel series will see Wallander investigate his first case. The story focuses on the formative experiences – professional and personal – faced by Kurt as a recently graduated police officer in his early 20s.
The series is created by Yellow Bird UK, a Banijay Group company, and the original producer of the successful BBC series Wallander. The English-language drama will be told over six episodes and features both British and Swedish cast.
Erik Barmack, Vice President, Head of International Originals at Netflix, says: “The Wallander novels have sold 40 million copies and been translated into over 40 different languages, while still being true and authentic to the Swedish noir that Mankell helped create. And the series created by Yellow Bird have also been fantastic global and local successes. Netflix is thrilled to continue this tradition and add new layers to the fantastic legacies that Mankell and Yellow Bird have created.”
Berna Levin, Creative Director, Yellowbird UK adds: “Henning Mankell’s beloved detective Kurt Wallander has a special place in our hearts as his eponymous series was the first Yellow Bird ever produced. So, it is with tremendous joy and pride that we embark on this new journey together with Netflix as our first production through Yellow Bird UK. Getting to meet Wallander as a young man and explore how the times and his new experiences will shape him to eventually become the man we already know and love is a thrilling opportunity. We are confident he will captivate new audiences and delight longstanding fans once again with his sharp intelligence, youthful enthusiasm, and unmistakable humanity.”
Production will start during 2019.
