“The king and queen are coming to Downton.” That’s the sound of Downton Abbey hitting new heights, as the TV series returns for a full feature-length outing – and we’ve got our first proper look at the movie with its full trailer finally released.
After the series concluded in 2015 with a Christmas special, the movie sees creator Julian Fellowes continue the story of the Crawley family on their expansive estate in the 20th Century. Brian Percival (The Book Thief, About a Girl) will direct the film, marking a homecoming for the helmer – he also directed the original pilot for the series. We already know that Lily James, who played Lady Rose MacClare in the drama, will not reprise her role in the movie, but the trailer does give us a confirmed list of who will be invited back: Lord Grantham, Lady Mary Talbot, the Dowager Lady Grantham, Tom Branson, Mr. Barrow, Mr. Bates, Mrs. Patmore, Daisy Mason, Lady Grantham, Lady Hexham, Lady Merton, Mr. Carson, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Bates, Mr. Molesley and Miss Baxter.
The movie will see them all rush to pull out all the stops, as George V and Queen Mary come to the Crawley’s home, ruffling feathers both above and below stairs. There are glimpses of all kinds of other changes in store, such as Thomas (Rob James-Collier) sharing a kiss with a mystery person, and the intrigue of Imelda Staunton joining her real-life husband Jim Carter in the movie’s cast. And, of course, there’s Dame Maggie Smith being as sarcastic as ever a the Lady Dowager. All that plus a royal luncheon, parade and dinner? Downton Abbey fans can expect to be well and truly served this autumn, when the film arrives in cinemas on Friday 13th September.

Next year sees Downton Abbey officially return to our screens in movie, and now, we’ve got the first trailer giving us a glimpse of what that’ll look like – namely, the estate fans have always loved, but really, really big.
Speculation about a feature film follow-up has been rife since the series concluded at Christmas 2015, with creator Julian Fellowes previously talking about potential ideas for a movie, should it be greenlit. The producers of ITV’s smash hit officially announced the movie earlier this year, with creator Julian Fellowes continuing the story of the Crawley family on their expansive estate in the 20th Century.

Downton Abbey movie to begin production this summer
16th July 2018
Downton Abbey will return to our screens once more, but not as we know it: the producers of ITV’s smash hit have announced that it will finally be bringing fans the movie that they have been crying out for ever since the show ended.
The hugely successful period drama, created by Julian Fellowes, follows the ups and downs of the Crawley family on their expansive estate in the early 20th Century. The eponymous Edwardian country home housed not only stars such as Maggie Smith, Dan Stevens and Hugh Bonneville, but also the Crawley family’s servants, sparking drama upstairs and downstairs across seven seasons, as the end of the Great War brought change to the world.
Over the years, it racked up awards at the Golden Globes and Emmys, becoming the most nominated non-US show at the latter, and winning over swathes of American fans. Speculation about a feature film follow-up has been rife since the series concluded at Christmas 2015, with Fellowes previously talking about potential ideas for a movie, should it be greenlit. Now, it’s officially happening, with the “original principal cast” reuniting to begin production on the project this summer.
Brian Percival (The Book Thief, About a Girl) will direct the film, marking a homecoming for the helmer – he also directed the original pilot for the series.
“After getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production,” said Gareth Neame, the film’s producer, in a statement. “Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen.”
The only person missing from the reunion? Lily James, who played Lady Rose MacClare in the drama.
“My character Rose moved off to New York, so it would be farfetched to bring her back,” she explained to PEOPLE. “I would have loved to have come back for a scene, but for a movie it can’t be like a Christmas special and it needs to be a focused storyline. There was no space for Rose.”
“I’m so excited for it — I’m going to be front row,” she added.
