Watch: Trailer for Netflix’s The Silent Sea

Netflix will travel across The Silent Sea this Christmas, with the debut of a new Korean sci-fi thriller.
Doona Bae will star in the series about a special team sent to secure a mysterious sample from an abandoned research facility on the moon. Set in a future Earth that has undergone desertification, the film sees the team uncover the truth behind an accident at the now-abandoned Balhae Base. Bae will play astrobiologist Doctor Song Ji-an, and will co-star with Gong Yoo (Train to Busan) as Han Yun-jae, the team leader who will put his colleague’s safety above all else. They are joined by Lee Joon (Father is Strange, Lucky) as head engineer Captain Ryu Tae-seok, who was an elite member of the Ministry of National Defence, but volunteered for this dangerous mission in an attempt to escape the ministry’s stifling environment.

Doona Bae to star in Netflix sci-fi The Silent Sea

Doona Bae is returning to Netflix for new sci-fi thriller The Silent Sea.
The star of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Bong Joon-ho’s The Host is a global star thanks to roles in Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending and Netflix’s Sense8. She was most recently seen in another Netflix project, the Korean period zombie thriller Kingdom.
Now, she’s teaming up with the streaming giant again for a series about a special team sent to secure a mysterious sample from an abandoned research facility on the moon.

Director Choi Hang Yong is at the helm, adapting the film from his short film of the same name. He is writing the script with Park Eunkyo (Mother), while Jung Woo-sung is on board as executive producer.
The series, produced by Artist Studio, will be released worldwide on Netflix.
The Silent Sea: Netflix orders Korean sci-fi

Netflix is returning to Korea for a new sc-fi series.
The Silent Sea (working title) is set in a precarious future where Earth is running out of water. The mystery thriller that follows a story of elite scientists who set off for the moon to retrieve some unknown samples from an abandoned research station.
The series is based on the eponymous 2014 short film directed by Choi Hang-yong, which garnered attention at the Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival the same year. Choi will also be joining the new Netflix series as the director of the show, while actor Jung Woo-sung serving as an executive producer.
Besides being a critically-acclaimed actor, Jung Woo-sung received significant attention in 2016 when he both produced and starred in a full-length feature remake of the short film Remember You.
The Silent Sea will be written by Park Eun-kyo, winner of Best Screenplay in 2010 for Mother at the 4th Asian Film Awards. It will be available exclusively on Netflix at an yet-to-be-confirmed date.
