Doona Bae is returning to Netflix for new sci-fi thriller The Silent Sea.
The star of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Bong Joon-ho’s The Host is a global star thanks to roles in Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending and Netflix’s Sense8. She was most recently seen in another Netflix project, the Korean period zombie thriller Kingdom.
Now, she’s teaming up with the streaming giant again for a series about a special team sent to secure a mysterious sample from an abandoned research facility on the moon.
Set in a future Earth that has undergone desertification, the film sees the team uncover the truth behind an accident at the now-abandoned Balhae Base. Bae will play astrobiologist Doctor Song Ji-an, and will co-star with Gong Yoo (Train to Busan) as Han Yun-jae, the team leader who will put his colleague’s safety above all else. They are joined by Lee Joon (Father is Strange, Lucky) as head engineer Captain Ryu Tae-seok, who was an elite member of the Ministry of National Defence, but volunteered for this dangerous mission in an attempt to escape the ministry’s stifling environment.
Director Choi Hang Yong is at the helm, adapting the film from his short film of the same name. He is writing the script with Park Eunkyo (Mother), while Jung Woo-sung is on board as executive producer.
The series, produced by Artist Studio, will be released worldwide on Netflix.
