Doctor Foster, Downton and The Night manager lead TV Choice Awards winners

Doctor Foster, Downton Abbey and The Night Manager were the top winners at the 2016 TV Choice Awards last night.
ITV’s costume drama bagged the big prize in an evening that was otherwise dominated by the BBC. Domestic thriller Doctor Foster beat War & Peace, The Night Manager and ITV’s recently renewed Marcella to be crowned Best New Drama, while the Beeb’s John Le Carre adaptation took home the Best Actor gong for Tom Hiddleston. The BBC also enjoyed success with Happy Valley earning Sarah Lancashire Best Actress for her turn as Catherine Cawood in the show’s second season.
Netflix received no attention whatsoever on the night, although the streaming giant does have the exclusive US rights to Happy Valley and has also acquired the American rights to ITV’s Marcella. Amazon, instead, was the only VOD service to get a mention in the competitive International Show category, thanks to Prime Video’s exclusive acquisition of Outlander. It went up against E4’s The Big Bang Theory and Fox’s The Walking Dead, but all were beaten by Sky Atlantic’s Game of Thrones.
ITV got one over on the Beeb by bagging Best Comedy for Birds of a Feather, which the channel revived years after its original airing on the BBC. ITV also beat EastEners to win Best Soap – not for Coronation Street, but Emmerdale, which also won Best Soap Actor for Danny Miller. EastEnders’ Lacey Turner won Best Soap Actress.
