YouTube Premium is getting its noir on with a new thriller from Ben Stiller and the writers of Sneaky Pete.
The video giant has ordered a pilot for Dark Cargo, a new series that will join its growing line-up of YouTube originals available through the YouTube Premium subscription service. In the last year, as YouTube Premium has expanded to the UK and other countries, its productions have become increasingly ambitious and high-profile, from Karate Kid sequel Cobra Kai to the recently released sci-fi thriller Origin, starring Tom Felton and Natalia Tena.
Dark Cargo looks to continue that pattern, with Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Productions on board as Executive Producer, alongside Nicky Weinstock. Hailing from eOne, Counterfeit Pictures and SEVEN24 films, the series pilot is written by Sneaky Pete’s Adam and Max Reid.
The high-octane, cliffhanger-driven, neo-noir thriller is set in the big rig cab of Joe Dobbs, as he traverses the darkest nights of his life. What begins as a random encounter with a disturbed stranger turns into a race against time, the police, and even more malevolent forces. All the while, Joe just wants to get back to his family.
No casting details have yet been released. Its commission arrives as YouTube is considering making some of its original shows and films available for free to non-Premium subscribers.
