Cold Feet and ITV take a break

Cold Feet and ITV are taking a break, following the conclusion of the show’s ninth season.
Written and created by Mike Bullen, the series stars James Nesbitt, Hermione Norris, Robert Bathurst, Fay Ripley and John Thomson as the nation’s favourite 50-something friends, as we follow their lives in Manchester. The show made an unexpected return to ITV screens in September 2016 and was one of the channel’s most successful drama launches of the year, prompting a second run in 2017. Renewals continues up until its ninth run, which premiered at the start of the year.
Season 9 ended with Adam (Jimmy Nesbitt), Karen (Hermione Norris), Jenny (Fay Ripley), Pete (John Thomson) and David (Robert Bathurst) all set to embark on adventures new; Adam and Karen’s relationship is thrown into jeopardy by an offer that’s hard to refuse. Meanwhile, some unexpected romantic vibes leave David with a spring in his stride. And, whilst drafting up their bucket list, the Giffords receive some news that puts a whole new perspective on life.
Now, the drama is officially taking a break from our screens. Creator Mike Bullen, the cast, producers and ITV all felt the time was right to rest the drama before embarking on a tenth season at a later stage, allowing time to pass before exploring the characters and their stories.
Mike says: “We feel we’ve explored to our satisfaction the issues confronting the characters at this stage of their lives and we want to give them all a little time to move on, to put clear water between the stories we’ve told thus far and the issues they’ll be exploring when they are empty nesters staring down the barrel of grandparenthood. We’re looking forward to returning at a later date to document the agony and the ecstasy of the third age…”
James, Hermione, Robert, Fay and John say: “The Cold Feet team have proved that life never stops being funny, challenging and bitter sweet. So, although the show will take a well earned break, we all look forward, when the time is right, to returning to warm the nation’s hearts once again.”
Kenton Allen, Executive Producer adds: “We’re so proud to have brought Cold Feet back for four amazing series and are now taking a well earned holiday and saying au-revoir and definitely not farewell to a much loved series that has defined generations of ITV viewers.”
Cold Feet will return to ITV for Season 9
22nd June 2019
Cold Feet will officially return to ITV for a ninth season.
The series, from acclaimed creator and writer Mike Bullen, has been recommissioned for six more episodes, as the show continues to enjoy momentum following its recent revival.
The Manchester based series, renewed by ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill, will once again bring together stars James Nesbitt, Hermione Norris, Robert Bathurst, Fay Ripley and John Thomson for more drama between the group of ageing friends. At the end of Season 8, Jenny (Fay Ripley) was dealing with her cancer treatment with husband, Pete (John Thomson), by her side, preparing herself for the long road ahead; David (Robert Bathurst) was putting his life back together with the support of his friends; and Karen (Hermione Norris) and Adam (James Nesbitt) were figuring out the boundaries of their burgeoning relationship and the impact it had on the close knit group.
Executive Producers for the series will be Kathryn O’Connor for Big Talk North alongside Big Talk CEO Kenton Allen and Managing Director Matthew Justice and writer Mike Bullen. The Producer is Jim Poyser.
Hill says: “We’re delighted to be returning to Manchester for more of Cold Feet. The audience reaction to the last series was incredible with many saying it’s getting better with age! We’re pleased to be working again with Mike Bullen whose moving, funny, complex and absorbing scripts are a joy to commission.”
Allen adds: “As I keep telling myself, 50 is the new 30, so we’re delighted to be able to continue to tell the stories of these much loved characters, who many of us have grown up with – and we’re delighted to be shooting again in Manchester and growing Big Talk North’s drama output with Cold Feet as our flagship show.”
Bullen comments: “I think we were all overwhelmed by the amazing response to the latest series. Jenny’s cancer in particular seemed to touch a nerve with viewers. There are still stories to tell for these characters but I’m conscious that we’ve raised the bar. The delight at being recommissioned has already been replaced by trepidation at the weight of expectation.”
Season 9 will shoot later this year and air on ITV in 2020.
