The new Doctor’s costume has officially been revealed and Peter Capaldi’s time in the TARDIS is destined be summed up in one word: Capaldigan.
In a picture released today by the BBC, Capaldi can be seen in the costume that will define his time as the Twelfth Time Lord in one of TV’s biggest roles. The look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden and it’s a classy cocktail of old and new: a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Dr. Marten shoes. And, just hidden underneath that Crombie? Peter Capaldi’s cardigan. The Capaldigan.
Commenting on his costume, Peter Capaldi says: “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”
Presumably referring to The Great Rebellio, everyone’s favourite 90s magician, the 12th Doctor looks like a daring mix of children’s entertainer and the sorcerer’s granddad – the Crombie coat done up with only one button (and that flash of red) a cheeky nod to the cape-wearing Jon Pertwee days of old.
The lack of a sonic screwdriver being pointed at something says it all. Well, except for that other word: Capaldigan.
Filming for Episode 1 of Season 8 began earlier this month, after 10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first much-anticipated glimpse of Capaldi’s Doctor. Indeed, The Time of The Doctor was the most-watched programme on BBC iPlayer over the festive period.
Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat adds: “New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!”
Suited. Booted. And well and truly Capaldiganned.
