Brooklyn Nine-Nine to end with Season 8

Brooklyn Nine-Nine will officially end with Season 8, the show’s creators have confirmed.
The hit cop comedy, created by Dan Goor and Michael Shur, premiered back in 2013, and follows a group of cops working the 99th precinct of the NYPD. The ensemble cast, led by Saturday Night Live veteran Andy Samberg, includes Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti, Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller. In 2018, fans were shocked to hear that Fox had cancelled the programme – and relieved to hear that NBC had rescued it and swiftly renewed it.
And so Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago returned for Season 6 to go on their luxury honeymoon, while Season 7 – which aired on E4 in the UK last year and arrives on Netflix UK this March – picked up after an assassination attempt on the city councillor, with Peralta leading a manhunt to find the shooter, joined by a demoted Captain Holt.
Before that had even reached our screens, NBC had already given a green light to an eight season. Since then, though, the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted TV and film production around the world, and the show’s writers had already confirmed that they were taking a step back from the original plans for Season 8 to rewrite scripts and reevaluate the series in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd at the hands of police last year.
Now, Goor has confirmed that Season 8 will be the show’s last.
“I’m so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve,” he said in a statement. “When Mike Schur and I first pitched the pilot episode to Andy, he said, ‘I’m in, but I think the only way to tell this story is over exactly 153 episodes,’ which was crazy because that was exactly the number Mike and I had envisioned.
“I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for eight seasons. They are not only among the most talented people in the business, they are all good human beings who have become a family. But most of all, I feel lucky that we have had the best fans in the world. Fans who literally saved us from cancellation. Fans who fill us with joy. Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honour the characters, the story and our viewers. I know some people will be disappointed it’s ending so soon, but honestly, I’m grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape.”
Brooklyn Nine-Nine renewed for Season 8
15th November 2019
Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been renewed for an eighth season.
The hit show, created by Dan Goor and Michael Shur, premiered back in 2013, and follows a group of cops working the 99th precinct of the NYPD. The ensemble cast, led by Saturday Night Live veteran Andy Samberg, includes Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti, Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller.
Fans were shocked, though, to hear that Fox had cancelled the programme after five seasons – and relieved to hear that NBC had rescued it and ordered a sixth run. NBC also renewed its deal with Channel 4, so the show’s UK TV home remains E4.
Season 6 saw Peralta and Santiago go on their luxury honeymoon and run into a familiar face. Gina and Boyle, meanwhile, got into a family squabble. While that has since played out in the US, with fans now looking to next year’s seventh season, NBC has already given a green light to an eighth.
