Netflix has nabbed the rights to Born to Be Murdered, a new thriller starring John David Washington.
The film takes place in Athens and Greece’s Epirus region and follows a couple on holiday who fall victim to a violent conspiracy with tragic consequences. John David Washington, fresh from starring in Tenet and Golden Globe nominated for BlacKkKlansman, gives the film an immediate high profile – indeed, his latest film, Malcolm & Marie, which he secretly filmed with Zendaya during lockdown, was recently snapped by Netflix during the Toronto International Film Festival.
Washington is joined in Born to Be Murdered by another high-profile name: Alicia Vikander. The film also co-stars Narcos’ Boyd Holbrook and Phantom Thread’s Vicky Krieps.
The film is directed by Ferdinando Cito Filomarino and written by Tommy Oliver. It’s produced by Luca Guadagnino and Marco Morabito for Frenesy Films along with Francesco Melzi d’Eril and Gabriele Moratti for MeMo with Raicinema.
Filomarino was second unit director on Guadagnino’s Suspiria and Call Me My Your Name and previously directed Antonia. This movie marks his English-language debut.
Netflix has bought the worldwide rights to the picture and will release it in 2021.
