Marvel has dropped a new trailer for Black Widow, ahead of its Disney+ debut this July.

The long-awaited comic book blockbuster explores Natasha Romanoff’s struggle to confront the darker parts of her ledger and deal with unfinished business. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour portrays Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz plays Melina.

The first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland and will debut on 9th July in cinemas where available and on Disney+, with a Premier Access fee of £19.99 on top of the £7.99 monthly Disney+ subscription.

Black Widow set for Disney+ release this July

Black Widow will be taking the Disney+ route as well as the theatrical route this July, Marvel has announced.

The film sees Scarlett Johansson reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff as she confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Co-starring David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz, and directed by Cate Shortland, the film has been one of the major blockbusters repeatedly pushed back during the coronavirus pandemic waiting for cinemas to reopen. Previously scheduled for a release on 7th May, Disney has now pushed it back to a confirmed release date of 9th July, when it will be released in cinemas (coronavirus pandemic allowing) and will also be available on Disney+ on the same day with a Premier Access fee.

Disney in the UK has confirmed with us that this will be “in most Disney+ markets”, which we understand to mean that it will include the UK and Ireland as well as the USA. That means you can expect something like the usual Premier Access fee of £19.99 on top of the £7.99 monthly Disney+ subscription. The good news is that you can also expect cinemas on this side of the pond to be open by then, with the government’s current roadmap set to allow them to reopen from 17th May.

The Premier Access move follows the same model as Raya and the Last Dragon earlier this year and Mulan last year, which indicates that the House of Mouse is pleased enough with the performance of both films to continue experimenting with the model. (Awards frontrunner Nomadland, on the other hand, will be released on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland with no additional charge on 30th April.)

Indeed, Disney+ will also give the day-and-date treatment to Cruella, starring Emma Stone, on 28th May. That will also stream with a Premier Access fee, as well as play in any cinemas available “in most Disney+ markets”, which, again, we understand to mean including the UK and Ireland.

The animated film Luca, meanwhile, will take the Soul approach and debut straight to Disney+ worldwide on 18th June with no additional charge.

The announcement comes as Disney reports that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has marked the biggest opening weekend for a Disney+ original series to date, ahead of WandaVision and The Mandalorian Season 2.
