Big Little Lies and The Handmaid’s Tale lead 2018 Golden Globe nominees
David Farnor | On 11, Dec 2017
Big Little Lies and The Handmaid’s Tale are leading the 2017 Golden Globe nominations, as HBO and Hulu remain the favourites to take home the year’s big awards.
The mini-series, which stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon and was recently renewed for a second season, has six nominations in total, followed by biopic Feud: Bette and Joan, with four nods, just ahead of its box set release on BBC iPlayer this Christmas. They are followed by Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, which has three nods but enters the race as the main contender, after it became the first streaming series to take home the top prize at this year’s Emmys.
Netflix, though, isn’t out for the count: the streaming giant has two shows in the Best Drama category: Stranger Things and The Crown. Amazon, meanwhile, continues to find success in the Comedy categories, with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel up against Netflix’s Master of None, ABC’s Black-ish, Showtime’s SMILF and NBC’s Will & Grace revival – which trumped NBC’s The Good Place to sit at the nominees’ table. Rachel Brosnahan is also up for Best Actress in a Musical Comedy, against Alison Brie in Netflix’s GLOW. Amazon has also earned Kevin Bacon his third Golden Globe nomination for its series I Love Dick. Its other original shows failed to get nods, though, including Transparent, which is currently mired in accusations against Jeffrey Tambor.
Other snubs include Netflix’s Mindhunter, Godless, American Vandal and Ozark – although the latter bagged a nod for Jason Bateman’s performance. The Leftovers, in its final season, was once again overlooked, as was Halt and Catch Fire, although neither snub will be as likely to attract anger as the omission of Twin Peaks from the line-up, save for a nomination for Kyle MacLachlan.
Film-wise, The Shape of Water (seven), The Post, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (six apiece) and Lady Bird are the most-nominated films. Amazon’s rumoured awards hopeful The Big Sick failed to bag any nominations, but fellow outlying contender Get Out has bagged a nod for both Best Actor (Daniel Kaluuya) and Best Comedy. Netflix, however, has racked up several nominations, including, in a promising sign, Mudbound for Best Original Song and Mary J. Blige’s supporting performance.
