Matthew McConaughey briefly drowns in the new trailer for Between Two Ferns: The Movie, and that darkly ridiculous joke sets the tone for Netflix’s upcoming comedy.

Based on the Funny or Die talk show, which is hosted by Zach Galifianakis, the film continues the tradition of the Hangover star interviewing celebrity guests for a few minutes while sitting between two ferns, mainly by coming up with the most inappropriate questions possible. Now, after the McConaughey incident, the movie follows Zach and his crew as they take a road trip to complete a series of high-profile interviews and restore Zach’s reputation.

Directed by Scott Aukerman, who wrote the script with Galifianakis, the film features a star-studded list of cameos, including Will Ferrell, Peter Dinklage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Rudd, Tiffany Haddish, Brie Larson, Keanu Reeves, Jon Hamm, John Cho, Chance the Rapper, Rashida Jones, Hailee Steinfeld, Tessa Thompson and John Legend.

The film premieres on Netflix on Friday 20th September. Here’s the trailer:

Zach Galifianakis’ Between Two Ferns is heading to Netflix for a movie.

The Funny or Die talk show, which is hosted by the comedian and actor, sees the Due Date and The Hangover star interview celebrity guests for a few minutes while sitting between two ferns. Questions range from non-sequiturs to insults, with largely improvised, antagonist exchanges that are often interrupted for unsubtle product plugs.

Now, the format’s scaling up for the big screen, with a typically meta premie. Here’s the synopsis:

Zach Galifianakis dreamed of becoming a star. But when Will Ferrell discovered his public access TV show “Between Two Ferns” and uploaded it to Funny Or Die, Zach became a viral laughing stock. Now Zach and his crew are taking a road trip to complete a series of high-profile celebrity interviews and restore his reputation. Directed by Scott Aukerman, Between Two Ferns; The Movie is a laugh-out-loud comedy that gives new insight into the curmudgeonly, beloved outsider Zach Galifianakis has created over the years.

Between Two Ferns; The Movie is written by Aukerman and Galifianakis, with Funny Or Die’s Caitlin Daley and Mike Farah producing alongside the pair. Galifianakis announced the news this week at one of Netflix’s For Your Consideration events to promote Season 2 of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, which premieres on 31st May.
