Trailer: Shrill Season 3 arrives on BBC Three this May
James R | On 21, May 2021
Shrill is back for its third and final season this May.
The Hulu series, which airs on BBC Three in the UK, is inspired by Lindy West’s book Shrill: Notes From a Loud Woman. It stars Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live) as Annie, an overweight young woman who wants to change her life – but not her body. The series also features Lolly Adefope, who plays her best friend and roommate Fran, along with Luka Jones (Ryan), Ian Owens (Amadi), John Cameron Mitchell (Gabe) and Patti Harrison (Ruthie).
“Top-notch writing and a glorious lead turn make this body-positive comedy a sensitive, bittersweet, funny treat,” we wrote in our review of Season 1.
Season 3 sees everything finally falling into place for Annie — she’s managed to dump her man-child boyfriend, catch the eye of a powerful new mentor, and snag some high-profile assignments. So why isn’t everything clicking? Sometimes life’s big challenge isn’t getting what you want, it’s knowing what you want.
Season 3 premieres on 7th May in the USA and will be available on BBC iPlayer from Saturday 22nd May.
Shrill is available on BBC iPlayer. Season 1 is available until November 2021. Season 2 is available until January 2022. Season 3 is available until May 2022.
Shrill renewed for Season 3
4th April 2020
Shrill will officially return for Season 3.
The series, which airs on BBC Three in the UK, is inspired by Lindy West’s book Shrill: Notes From a Loud Woman. It is executive produced by Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks.
The programme debuted its second season earlier this year, with Annie on a path to self-discovery, joined by both Fran and her mother, as they figure out what they really want in life. And while Annie doesn’t always find it easy – she’s no longer the doormat she once was.
Now, Hulu has officially given an eight-episode renewal to the comedy.
“We have so many ideas that I feel like I would be so excited to weave in there,” Bryant said in an interview earlier this year about the prospect of a third run. “I think part of what I would be excited to show is that yes, she has come to the other side of some of her insecurities, but they do rear their ugly head.”
“I would love to go a little deeper on some of the daily indignities of living with a body that sometimes betrays you or that other people have feelings about, and having to suffer those. I just feel like there’s so much more to be said and to be done with it.”
Shrill returns to BBC Three this January
14th January 2020
Shrill will return to BBC Three this January for Season 2.
The only channel has acquired the UK rights for the eight-part sophomore run, after debuting the comedy’s first season last December. The series stars Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live) as Annie, an overweight young woman who wants to change her life – but not her body. The series also features Lolly Adefope, who plays her best friend and roommate Fran, along with Luka Jones (Ryan), Ian Owens (Amadi), John Cameron Mitchell (Gabe) and Patti Harrison (Ruthie). It is executive produced by Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks.
Bryant returns for Season 2 as Annie, who’s feeling pretty good after having faced her demons – her mom (Julia Sweeney), her boss (John Cameron Mitchell) and her troll… With boyfriend Ryan (Luka Jones) and best friend Fran (Lolly Adefope) by her side, she’s ready to take on the world. But was hastily quitting her job and jumping into a relationship with someone a little less than career-focused the best idea?
Annie’s on a path to self-discovery, joined by both Fran and her mother, as they figure out what they really want in life. And while Annie doesn’t always find it easy – she’s no longer the doormat she once was. Annie’s determined and she’s only just getting started…
Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, says: “We are delighted that Shrill’s mix of sharp social commentary, engaging characters and relatable situations have proved to be such a hit with BBC Three viewers.”
Season 2 will be available as a box set on BBC iPlayer from Saturday 25th January.
BBC Three bags US comedy Shrill
23rd November 2019
BBC Three has acquired the UK rights from Warner Bros. Television for new comedy Shrill.
The six-part series stars Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live) as Annie, an overweight young woman who wants to change her life – but not her body. The series also features Lolly Adefope, who plays her best friend and roommate Fran, along with Luka Jones (Ryan), Ian Owens (Amadi), John Cameron Mitchell (Gabe) and Patti Harrison (Ruthie). Annie is trying to start her career while juggling bad boyfriends, a sick parent, and a perfectionist boss. Along the way, she will weigh the pros and cons of having a child with her hook-up buddy and the decision-making process will force her, with help from her best friend Fran, to figure out who she is and what she wants from her life. She will also write her first article, and she will finally ask for more from the people in her life than she has before. She hits a setback when an Internet troll appears and tries to drag her self-esteem back down where it started. But she will ultimately promote body positivity and explain exactly what it’s like to be a larger woman in today’s world.
