Ava DuVernay is reportedly working on a Prince documentary for Netflix.
The late, great musician was a musical legend, with a career that spanned from Purple Rain to Batman and won awards that included an Oscar, Golden Globe and multiple Grammys. Now, his life is being portrayed on the big screen for Netflix, with Ava DuVernay at the helm. DuVernay is no stranger to Netflix, with prison documentary The 13th debuting on the streaming service. She has since retrained with the company to make The Central Park Five, a series based on the landmark case of legal injustice. She’s no stranger to music either, though, with her 2008 debut This Is the Life charring LA’s alternative hip-hop scene in the 90s.
The project has been in the work for several months, two sources have confirmed to Variety, and has the full cooperation of Prince’s estate, which will provide interviews, footage, photos and archival access. The documentary will consist of several parts, covering the artist’s whole life.
“Prince was a genius and a joy and a jolt to the senses,” Ava told Deadline in an interview. “The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate.”
