Netflix has picked up its second Philippine film by bagging the rights to horror movie Aurora.
The film, which is directed by Yam Laranas (The Road, Sigaw), follows the titular passenger ship, which collides into a rocky sea threatening an entire island. A young woman and her sister survive the wreck and search the missing dead for a bounty, only for the dead themselves to come looking for shelter.
The film is written by Laranas and Gin de Mesa and premiered at the Metro Manila festival last year. Nominated for the FAMAS award for best visual effects, it also boasts star power in its lead actor Anne Curtis, an Australian who was a child star in the Philippines and has since become one of the country’s biggest celebrities. She is joined by Phoebe Villamor and Mercedes Cabral.
Curtis also starred in action flick BuyBust, directed by Erik Matti, which was the first feature from the Philippines to be bought by Netflix. It will shortly be joined by Aurora, which will be released by Netflix on 25th April.
Aurora is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
