Ant and Dec and Doctor Foster were the big winners at the 2018 National Television Awards last night
The presenting duo, who have been on our screens ever since SM:TV Live on Saturday mornings, are one of the most popular double-acts on British screens, beating Bradley Walsh, Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby to the Best Presenters award at the NTAs once again – the 17th time in a row they have won the prize.
They also won the Bruce Forsyth Award for Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, and accepted the I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’s Best Challenge award – seeing off hot competition from Love Island, Master Chef and Channel 4’s poached and revamped Great British Bake Off.
The BBC’s Doctor Foster was the night’s other top winner, walking away with two prizes: Best Drama Performance, which saw Suranne Jones trump Jenna Coleman in Victoria and Tom Hardy and Taboo, and Best Drama, which faced down competition including HBO’s Game of Thrones and ITV’s Liar. ITV, though, got its own back, beating the Beeb’s Line of Duty to win Best Crime Drama for the third and final season of Broadchurch.
Emmerdale won the fiercely contested annual battle for Best Serial Drama, beating Coronation Street, EastEnders and Hollyoaks. Similarly fierce was the fight for Best Talent Show, which Strictly Come Dancing waltzed off with. Best Comedy, meanwhile, went to Peter Kay’s Car Share, which enjoyed a record-breaking release on BBC iPlayer as a box set for its second season. Blue Planet II won the Impact Award, while Paul O’Grady, currently hosting Channel 5’s reboot of Blind Date, won the Special Recognition Award.
The year’s awards were handed out last night at The O2 London, but while the glittered and glamoured stars of UK TV were in attendance, the evening saw a surprising lack of online shows nominated for any awards: in 2017, Netflix received its first ever NTA nominations for Stranger Things and Making a Murderer, but lost out on both counts.
