Amazon Studios has acquired the global rights to Jennifer Kent’s Alice + Freda Forever.
The adaptation of Alexis Coe’s book is written and directed by Kent, who made a big splash on the world stage with The Babadook, which was followed by The Nightingale. While that hasn’t been released in the UK yet, Kent’s name still carries clout globally, and Amazon hasn’t missed the chance to snap up the worldwide rights to her latest project.
The movie will tell the true story of Alice Mitchell, who murdered her lover Freda Ward. “In 1890’s Memphis, two teenage girls fall deeply in love, until jealousy and outside forces turn their romance into an unstable obsession”, reads the official logline.
The deal was brokered at the Toronto International Film Festival, which kicked off at the end of this week. Amazon is in town to debut The Report, its new thriller with Adam Driver, and its other awards hopeful The Aeronauts, starring Eddie Redmaybe and Felicity Jones.
The film will go into production next summer.
