Amazon snaps up Sony’s Cinderella
7th May 2021
Amazon has snapped up the rights to Sony’s retelling of Cinderella.
The film is a musically driven bold new take on the traditional story in which the heroine is an ambitious young woman whose dreams are bigger than the world will allow. Written and directed by Kay Cannon (Pitch Perfect, Blockers), the film has a star-studded cast that includes Idina Menzel, Billy Porter, Nicholas Galitzine, Minnie Driver and Pierce Brosnan.
Singer Camila Cabello will play the title role, marking her feature film debut. She is also behind the music for the movie, which includes original songs by her, as well as other contemporary artists.
The movie was originally slated for a theatrical debut this summer, but amid uncertainty surrounding the cinematic landscape during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Sony Pictures has instead sold the project to Amazon Studios. It follows Sony’s similar deals on Fatherhood and Vivo with Netflix, and a number of high-profile Amazon acquisitions in the past year, including Coming 2 America, Borat 2 and Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse. Sony retains the rights in China, while the rest of the world will see the film premiere on Amazon Prime Video.
