All eyes were on La La Land at the 2017 BAFTAs last night, as Damien Chazelle’s musical won five times, including Chazelle for Best Director, Emma Stone for Best Leading Actress, Linus Sandgren for Best Cinematography, Justin Hurwitz for Best Original Music and, of course, the whole movie for Best Film.

The evening, though, marked a major moment for both Netflix and Amazon, who each won their first BAFTA film awards.

Ava DuVernay’s 13th, exploring race in the US criminal justice system, won the award for Best Documentary, the first time a Netflix original has taken home a coveted BAFTA mask. Amazon, meanwhile, went one better, with Manchester by the Sea (which the online giant snapped up at last year’s Sundance) waltzing away with both Best Leading Actor for Casey Affleck and Best Original Screenplay for Kenneth Lonergan.

For those catching up, Netflix is also home to two other winners from the night, including Best Film Not in the English Language – Hungarian holocaust drama, Son of Saul – and Under the Shadow, which saw writer/director Babak Anvari and producers Emily Leo, Oliver Roskill and Lucan Toh receive the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

Distributor and exhibitor Curzon also won the Special Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema, in recognition of its work bringing art house and foreign language cinema to British audiences – including via their streaming service, Curzon Home Cinema. As if to prove a point, that’s where you can currently watch this year’s Best Short Film winners: Home (live action) and A Love Story (animation). The night also saw Kubo and the Two Strings awarded Best Animated Film, Viola Davis named Best Supporting Actress and, in a welcome display of support for home talent, Dev Patel named Best Supporting Actor for his turn in Lion. Also in the spotlight was British legend Ken Loach, whose I, Daniel Blake was crowned Outstanding British Film, and Tom Holland, who was voted by the public as the year’s Rising Star.
