Alfie and Kat to star in EastEnders spin-off series

Alfie and Kat will star in an EastEnders spin-off series next year.
The couple, played by Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace, have become a favourite among viewers over the years. The show, meanwhile, has consistently been one of the most-watched titles on BBC iPlayer, proving that fondness for Albert Square remains strong, even in an increasingly on-demand age. Later in 2015, therefore, when Alfie and Kat take a break from Walford, they will return in their own series on BBC One.
The six-episode drama will follow the on/off lovers, as they reunite to put their past behind them, heading out of Walford to start a new life.
The drama was created by Dominic Treadwell-Collins, EastEnders Executive Producer, and will be written and produced by the EastEnders team.
Dominic says: “In the next few weeks on EastEnders, viewers will witness several huge twists for Kat and Alfie Moon that will change their lives forever. Now is the perfect time to take two of EastEnders’ most beloved and enduring characters out of their comfort zone as they head to Ireland to search for answers to some very big questions… My team here are very excited about creating a whole new drama that stands apart from EastEnders while taking our style of storytelling to a place of stories, myth, secrets and immeasurable beauty.”
The show follows a string of shorter spin-offs from the soap opera, featuring popular characters such as Nick Cotton and Ricky & Bianca – and, earlier this year, an iPlayer-exclusive Gogglebox-style show of the two actors watching back popular EastEnders moments.
“Both Jessie and I are absolutely thrilled to be given this amazing opportunity,” says Richie. “To have a whole drama focused around Kat and Alfie is a huge honour for us both and we just can’t wait to start filming.”
