13 Reasons Why Season 2 returns this month, and we’ve got our first look at what’s in store, with a bunch of new photos released by Netflix.
The second run of the teen drama, based on the 2007 novel by Jay Asher, picks up in the aftermath of high schooler Hannah’s death and the start of our characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery.
Liberty High prepares to go on trial, but someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth surrounding Hannah’s death concealed. A series of ominous polaroids lead Clay and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up.
In preparation for the launch of Season 2, Netflix is also adding new resources to 13ReasonsWhy.info, including an updated Discussion Guide and a new Discussion Series – a set of videos where cast address issues in the series, including bullying, sexual assault and drug abuse.
All episodes of Season 2 will premiere on Netflix on Friday 18th May. Read on below for the trailer.

1st May 2018
13 Reasons Why will return on Friday 18th May, Netflix has confirmed.
The drama, which is based on the 2007 novel by Jay Asher, has been one of the major talking points of the last year, not least because of the show’s subject matter: the series revolves around the suicide of Hannah, who leaves behind a series of tape recorded messages for 13 people who were responsible in some way for her death.
With that story wrapped up by the end of the first season, the tapes were just the beginning. Season 2 will pick up in the aftermath of events and explore other characters starting their complicated journeys toward healing. 7 new characters cast for 13 Reasons Why Season 2
9th August 2017
Seven new characters will enroll for 13 Reasons Why Season 2 – and Netflix has already cast them.
The Netflix drama, which is based on the 2007 novel by Jay Asher, has been one of the major talking points of this spring TV season, not least because of the show’s subject matter: the series revolves around the suicide of Hannah, who leaves behind a series of tape recorded messages for 13 people who were responsible in some way for her death.
With that story wrapped up by the end of the first season, Season 2 will pick up in the aftermath of events and explore other characters starting their complicated journeys toward healing. To do, it is expanding its cast with seven new characters.
Variety reports that Anne Winters, Bryce Cass, Chelsea Alden, Allison Miller, Samantha Logan, Kelli O’Hara, and Ben Lawson have been cast for the show’s second run. While they are not regulars, they will appear in the majority of episodes, and will not only be high school students but also adults such as a litigator brought in by the parents to file a lawsuit against the school.
Winters will play Chloe, described as “the beautiful it girl at Liberty High and the new head cheerleader”, while Cass will play cynical troublemaker Cyrus, who serves as an unexpected champion of the downtrodden. Cyrus’ sister, Mackenzie, an “artsy and witty girl who isn’t afraid to speak her mind”, will by played by Alden.
Other students include Nina (Logan), a track star with a secret, Jackie (O’Hara), an advocator for victims of bullying. Adults joining the cast will be Sonya (Miller), the smart and ambitious young litigator, and Rick (Lawson), the school’s baseball coach.
Season 2 of 13 ReasonS Why does not have a release date yet, but we expect it to arrive on netflix in 2018. You can catch up with our review of Season 1 here.
13 Reasons Why renewed for Season 2
7th May 2017
13 Reasons Why has been officially renewed for a second season.
While that story is wrapped up by the end of the first season, though, speculation has been rife about the possibility of a renewal – with Asher also commenting that he’d be curious to see what opportunities there might be to continue exploring the lives of the programme’s supporting characters.
“Every action we have is going to have repercussions in ways we could not anticipate,” he told EW in an interview earlier this year. “You realize that with not just what Hannah did, but also how other people treated Tyler throughout it. It’s the whole message of the book. Of course, there’s obviously ways to go with a second season if they do that.”
Now, Selena Gomez, one of the show’s exec producers, has confirmed that the show’s return has been given the green light.
“Their story isn’t over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming,” she wrote on Instagram, where she also posted a short video featuring locations from the first season, including Liberty High School.
There is no word yet on a cast list for the second season, or its tentative release date. Until then, you can catch up with Season 1 on Netflix – read our spoiler-free review here.
13 Reasons Why author would be open to Season 2
12th April 2017
Will there be a Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why? There are many reasons why Netflix shouldn’t renew the adaptation of Jay Asher’s book for a second run, but Asher has offered up at least one reason for the streaming service to consider it: he’d like to see it.
Speaking to EW, the writer responded to fans clamouring for more episodes of the series, which was adapated by Brian Yorkey for the screen.
“I’d just like a continuation of all those characters,” he commented. “I’m curious as well. What happens to Clay? How do people react to what Alex did at the very end? What’s going to happen to Mr. Porter? I’d thought of a sequel at some point. I’d brainstormed it, but decided I wasn’t going to write it. So I’d love to see it.”
The show revolves around the suicide of Hannah, who leaves behind a series of tape recorded messages for 13 people who were responsible in some way for her death. While that story is wrapped up by the end of the first season, though, there are still opportunities to continue exploring the lives of the supporting characters.
“Things weren’t left open in the hopes of a sequel,” says Asher. “There is no end for the characters left behind.”
“Every action we have is going to have repercussions in ways we could not anticipate,” he continues. “You realize that with not just what Hannah did, but also how other people treated Tyler throughout it. It’s the whole message of the book. Of course, there’s obviously ways to go with a second season if they do that.”
He has no plans to write a second novel, he adds.
“I’d thought about it happening over several days like it does on the TV show. Like when Clay confronts Bryce but Bryce doesn’t know about the tapes yet, I had a similar scene in mine originally. So when I realized where they were going with that relationship, to me it was just another sign they got my characters.”
But he notes that in a different medium, the world could be explored further, while the book can still “be itself”, without its message being affected.
So does that mean Netflix, which has a fondness for renewing its original projects wherever possible, would hit the green light on more 13 Reasons?
“I’m not allowed to say either way if there is or is not a second season,” adds Asher, cryptically.
