Netflix buys Fear Street trilogy from Disney
12th August 2020
Netflix has nabbed a trilogy of Fear Street movies from Disney.
The films are based on the RL Stine novels that are the bestselling teen horror series of all time. The novels, first published in 1995, are set in the fictional city of Shadyside, Ohio. The three adaptations cover three different time periods, including the 1600s.
Directed by Honeymoon helmer Leigh Janiak, they star a cast that includes Kiana Madeira, Olivia Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Ashley Zukerman, Fred Hechinger, Julia Rehwald and Jeremy Ford. Produced at Fox by Chernin Entertainment, they were filmed last year in Georgia and planned to be released in June – until, of course, the coronavirus pandemic caused cinemas to close, leaving their release up in the air.
Enter Netflix, which is continuing its dominant run of picking up films that studios don’t want to hold on for too much longer and make a loss or release in cinemas too soon or on too limited a scale and also make a loss. And so the streamer has snapped up all three completed films from Disney, which acquired Fox last year.
It joins similar recent acquisitions that include The Woman in the Window, another Fox/Disney project, and three Paramount titles: SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run, The Lovebirds and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
