Black Friday VOD Deals: From the new NOW TV Box to Amazon Fire TV
James R | On 27, Nov 2015
Yes, Black Friday is here, the day when Brits rush to the shops to snap up bargains, as if they’re Americans who have just celebrated Thanksgiving. Not like the old Black Fridays, when thing weren’t so commercialised. Back then, we just treated it like a normal Friday here in the UK.
While we’re not ones for hammering down high street shop doors, though, there are a few VOD deals around this weekend. A cheap way to stay indoors and buy something that makes it socially acceptable to continue staying indoors and avoiding the apocalyptic shopping centre crowds outside? That’s much more British.
From half-price plays to affordable set top boxes, here are some of the best VOD Black Friday deals. If you spot any we’ve missed, share them below.
NOW Box: 40% off £24.99 bundles
The NOW Box is the most limited of the streaming media devices, with no Netflix or Amazon Prime hidden in its shiny black case. But it’s also the cheapest, available for £15, and is one of the few devices to offer all of the Freeview catch-up services. (Read our review here.)
The NOW part is where it gets more interesting: the subscription VOD platform is an OTT service that gives you Sky movies or TV both live and on-demand without the expensive Sky contract. A NOW Cinema Membership – access to the whole Sky Movies library – costs £9.99 a month. A NOW Entertainment Membership – Sky Atlantic (The Affair and Game of Thrones), FOX UK (The Walking Dead) and Sky 1 (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl) – costs £7.99 a month. And a Sky Sports Day Pass – live Sky Sports streaming – costs £8.99 for 24 hours.
NOW is giving away bundles of passes with its boxes as follows:
NOW Box with 2 months NOW Cinema Membership – £14.99
NOW Box with 3 months Entertainment Membership – £14.99
NOW Box with 2 Sports Day Passes – £14.99
Available until: 11.59pm Monday 30th November.
Amazon Fire TV
Amazon’s Fire TV Stick is almost the same as its Fire TV set top box, plugging into your telly’s HDMI port and offering Netflix, Amazon Prime, iPlayer, Curzon Home Cinema and more.
Fire TV Stick for £24.99 instead of £34.99
Available until: 11.59pm Friday 27th November
Amazon Video
Amazon is also offering a range of films for £5.99 in HD for a limited period of time. We picked out the good ‘uns:
Digital Theatre
Perhaps the best deals of the bunch, Digital Theatre – a video on-demand service that specialises in recordings of stage productions – is offering an impressive 50 per cent off all of its plays if you use the code “BLACKOUT” at the checkout.
That includes:
The Crucible (Richard Armitage)
Private Lives (Toby Stephens)
Ghosts (dir. Richard Eyre)
Much Ado About Nothing (David Tennant, Catherine Tate)
All My Sons (David Suchet)
Available until: 11.59pm Friday 27th November
iTunes
iTunes is offering Terminator GEnisys for £6.99 in HD until Monday 30th November, but what’s really of value is its array of £5.99 HD movies – a similar offer to Amazon Video, but for Apple users. Again, we chose some of the better ones:
