BAFTA Rising Star Nominees 2017: Where you can see them in action on Netflix and Amazon
James R | On 06, Jan 2017
This week, BAFTA unveiled its nominees for 2017’s Rising Star award. The only award that is voted for by the public, it recognises the world’s best upcoming talent, with previous winners ranging from John Boyega to a young James McAvoy.
This year’s list is one of the most impressive in the awards’ history, so before you cast your vote here, we’ve put together a guide to where you can catch up with each nominee’s screen history on your favourite subscription VOD services.
Laia Costa
Spanish actress Laia Costa starred in the astonishing film Victoria last year, which was almost entirely improvised by the actors. The 134-minute film was shot in one single take, with the cast nailing it on their third attempt. Costa’s cracking lead performance, which sees her stop and play the piano mid-take, is something to behold. The good news? You can behold it on Netflix UK, along with her role in Palm Trees in the Snow.

Lucas Hedges
Get ready to learn the name Lucas Hedges, because when you see him in Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea – Amazon’s original film, out in UK cinemas soon – he’s all you’ll be talking about. NBR named Hedges their Male Breakthrough Performer of the Year for his work in the film as “Patrick,” a teenage boy whose uncle (Casey Affleck) is forced to take care of him after his father (Kyle Chandler) suddenly passes away. He’s also been in Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Labor Day and The Zero Theorem – most of which you can see on either Netflix UK or Amazon Prime Video.

Tom Holland
Tom Holland has become one of Hollywood’s fastest rising stars as he takes on the iconic role of Spider-man for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom received rave reviews in his first appearance as Spider-man in the Russo Brother’s Captain America: Civil War, alongside Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans. He recently finished filming Spiderman: Homecoming for Sony Pictures opposite Michael Keaton. It’s his turn in The Impossible that really wowed, though, which he has followed up with appearances in Wolf Hall, Locke and In the Heart of the Sea.

Ruth Negga
Ruth Negga is one of the most promising and versatile actresses around, already earning praise for her turn in Jeff Nichols’ Loving. She was remarkable in indie British drama Iona last year, while an appearance in Warcraft: The Beginning solidified her big screen credits, alongside a recurring turn in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Both build on her roles in E4’s Misfits and National Theatre productions of Phaedre and Titus Andronicus. But for us, she’ll always be Tulip O’Hare in AMC’s violently fun TV series Preacher, available on Amazon Prime Video.

Anya Taylor-Joy
Anya Taylor-Joy is known for her breakthrough and debut film role of Thomasin in the haunting film The Witch (coming soon to Sky Cinema and NOW). Before she goes on to appear in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split alongside James McAvoy, though, get to know her in Netflix original flick Barry, a drama about the young Barack Obama, which we gave the thumbs up in our review here.
