Studio Ghibli. Those are still the two most exciting words for any Netflix user, as the streaming giant continues the gradual release of the Japanese anime studio’s masterpieces on any streaming platform for the first time. That on its own would be worth the price of a subscription, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg in a month that’s bursting with big new arrivals – and some of the best movies of recent years.

The BAFTA-nominated documentary Apollo 11 leads a wave of impressive film arrivals, including First Reformed, Blockers, The Post, I, Tonya, A Quiet Place and 2017’s It. For those seeking spooky entertainment, Castlevania returns for a third season, joined by other returning Netflix original Kingdom, the Korean zombie hit, On My Block, Elite and Ozark are also back for new seasons.

New Netflix originals this month include Mark Wahlberg film Spenser Confidential, Carmen Sandiego’s interactive outing To Steal or Not to Steal, and new anime spin-off Altered Carbon: Resleeved.

Studio Ghibli – 1st March

Netflix drops its second of three monthly releases of Studio Ghibli movies with some of the anime giants’s biggest hitters, including Arrietty, My Neighbors The Yamadas, Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, The Cat Returns and The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya. Apollo 11 – 4th March

This masterful retelling of the moon landings using stunning archive footage is a soaring triumph of cinema.

Castlevania: Season 3 – 5th March

Netflix’s animation, inspired by the classic video game, returns for a third season that’s even darker and more brutal.

First Reformed – 5th March

Ethan Hawke is remarkable in Paul Schrader’s blistering, challenging study of doubt, guilt, despair and purpose.

Mighty Little Bheem: Festival of Colors: Collection 1 – 5th March

This Holi, little Bheem is ready to paint the town!

The Protector: Season 3 – 6th March

Istanbul is in the palm of an unknown enemy, The Vizier. While Hakan now has the help of Nisan, Burak and a new Loyal Army, it is his past that enlightens him the most in this battle.

I Am Jonas – 6th March

A turbulent past haunts Jonas, who recalls his teenage love affair with the impulsive, twisted and yet irresistible Nathan.

Blockers – 6th March

Generations clash in this laugh-out-loud teen-and-parent comedy that balances progressive smarts with gross-out giggles.

Guilty – 6th March

A police officer, demoted to dispatch duty, is consumed by a call from an abducted woman desperate to be saved.

Paradise PD: Season 2 – 6th March

“The war is coming… hard,” promises Netflix’s adult animation about an inept police department, which is back for its second season.

Spenser Confidential – 6th March

When two Boston Police officers are murdered, ex-cop Spenser (Mark Wahlberg) teams up with his no-nonsense roommate, Hawk (Winston Duke), to take down criminals in this action-comedy. Directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor), Spenser Confidential stars Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter), Winston Duke (Us), Alan Arkin (Argo), Iliza Shlesinger and Austin Post.

Ugly Delicious: Season 2 – 6th March

Netflix’s food series sees chef David Chang tour the globe. The aim is to discover different cultures, cuisines and cooks – and then find a way to mash them together. Directed by 20 Feet from Stardom’s Morgan Neville, the series follows the founder of Momofoku, dishing up hot topics, spicy laughs and a huge portion of mouth-watering images.

Carmen Sandiego: To Steal or Not to Steal – 10th March

Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego reboot gets its own interactive offering.

Straight Outta Compton – 11th March

The solid elements just about the outweigh the stodgy ones in this biographical drama about N.W.A.

On My Block: Season 3 – 11th March

Netflix’s teen series, co-created by Lauren Iungerich (Awkward), Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft, is a coming-of-age comedy about four bright and street-savvy kids in LA. Starring Diego Tinoco, Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Jessica Marie Garcia and Ronnie Hawk, it follows the friends as they navigate their way through the triumph, pain and the newness of high school in the South Central neighbourhood.

Dirty Money: Season 2 – 11th March

From crippling payday loans to cars that cheat emissions tests, this investigative series exposes brazen acts or financial corruption and malpractice.

A Quiet Place – 13th March

John Krasinski’s terrifyingly taut survival thriller is so good you’ll be shouting about it for weeks.

Elite: Season 3 – 13th March

Netflix’s series, written by Carlos Montero (The Time in Between) and Darío Madrona (Génesis), takes place in Las Encinas, the best and most exclusive school in Spain, where the elite send their children to study. It’s also where three working class kids have just been admitted after their academy was collapsed and the local council divvied up the students between other schools in the area. They thought that they’d lucked out, but maybe they weren’t so lucky after all – because by the end of Season 1, a dead body had turned up and a suspect had been found. Season 2 saw the class grow in size, with the addition of several new faces. Now, with the first two seasons’ murder plot wrapped up, the ripples of what was found out continue to spread.

Kingdom: Season 2 – 13th March

An epidemic turns Joseon into hell on earth amid the ravages left by the ever-growing greed of the Cho family. In Kingdom Season 2, Crown Prince Lee Chang continues his desperate, bloody struggle, with no one he can trust to help him.

Go Karts – 13th March

From Top Gear director Owen Trevor and Paper Planes screenwriter Steve Worland, this Australian family film follows 15-year-old Jack, who, when his mother moves them to a new town, discovers go kart racing and dedicates himself to the sport. With the support of an old race-car driver with a secret past, and his new best friends, Jack must learn to control his recklessness to win the national title.

Lost Girls – 13th March

The narrative debut of two-time Oscar nominee Liz Garbus follows Mari Gilbert, as she relentlessly drives law enforcement agents to search for her missing daughter and in the process sheds light on a wave of unsolved murders on the South Shore barrier islands of Long Island. Inspired by true events, it stars Amy Ryan, Gabriel Byrne and Lola Kirke.

It (2017) – 16th March

A classy horror picture with likeable characters and a nightmarish sense of adventure.

The Post – 17th March

Spielberg’s gripping thriller about the importance of a free press is understated, but its relevance is deafening.

Shaun the Sheep: Adventures from Mossy Bottom: Season 1 – 17th March

Clever sheep Shaun, loyal dog Bitzer and the rest of the Mossy Bottom gang cook up fun on the farm in this show from Aardman Animations.

Altered Carbon: Resleeved – 19th March

Dai Sato, the creative mind behind Cowboy Bebop, further explores and expands upon the Altered Carbon universe in this new anime series.

The Letter for the King: Season 1 – 20th March

A young boy holds the fate of the kingdom in his hands when he embarks on a quest to deliver a secret message in this fantasy drama.

Tiger King – 20th March

From the executive producer of FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened comes this docuseries about Joe Exotic — a gun-toting polygamist who presides over an Oklahoma animal park — and the murder-for-hire plot that led to his arrest.

Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker: Season 1 – 20th March

Netflix’s new series inspired by the life of Madam CJ Walker tells the untold and highly irreverent tale of Sarah Breedlove, exploring how the black hair care pioneer and mogul overcame hostile turn-of-the-century America, epic rivalries, tumultuous marriages and some trifling family to become the USA’s first black, self-made female millionaire, Starring Octavia Spencer, Carmen Ejogo and Tiffany Haddish.

Freud: Season 1 – 23rd March

A young Sigmund Freud solves disappearances and murders in late 19th-century Vienna, where he and a psychic medium get tangled in an occult conspiracy.

Ozark: Season 3 – 27th March

Netflix’s drama from Jason Bateman returns for a third run. Six months on from Season 2 and the casino is up and running, but Marty and Wendy are fighting for control of the family’s destiny. Marty preaches keeping the status quo. Aided by an alliance with Helen and drug cartel leader Omar Navarro, Wendy plots for expansion. But when Wendy’s brother Ben comes into town, everyone’s lives are thrown into chaos.

Boss Baby: Back in Business: Season 3 – 16th March

The Boss Baby brings his big brother Tim to the office to teach him the art of business in this animated spin-off from DreamWorks’ animated film.
