What’s coming soon to Netflix UK in June 2016?
David Farnor | On 26, May 2016
Summer is here and Netflix is breaking out the big blockbusters, from Watchmen and Guardians of the Galaxy to Transformers: Age of Extinction and Titanic. The biggest blockbuster of all, of course, is Orange Is the New Black, which returns for a fourth season this month.
Kids are equally well served during the school holidays, with new runs for several of the streaming giant’s original DreamWorks series, not to mention the debut of its Voltron reboot. (It’s also worth noting that Shark Tale and Rise of the Guardians, once scheduled for earlier months this year, are now confirmed as arriving in June.)
The smaller titles, though, are perhaps the ones that are most promising, from Speed Sisters and Sundance hit The Fundamentals of Caring to the BBC’s Detectorists.
And, of course, there are the weekly episodes of all the new seasons that began last month, from Scream: Season 2 to Chelsea: Season 1.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Netflix UK in June 2016:
Note: These are official release dates from Netflix, but all future dates are subject to change.
Detectorists: Season 1 – 1st June
A sitcom about metal detectorists? You could be forgiven for skipping past this unassuming BBC Four series, but Mackenzie Crook delivers his script – about two show ground-gazing friends – with an endearingly downbeat charm, supported by the excellent Toby Jones, who manages to be both socially inept and amusingly sympathetic. Dig past the quiet surface and there’s treasure here.
Meet the Patels – 1st June
Directed by brother and sister team Ravi Patel (Scrubs, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Master of None) and Geeta Patel (Project Kashmir), this award-winning comedy blends rom-com, documentary and home video formats to create an unusual, and hugely charming, look at dating in a first-generation Indian American family.
Titanic – 1st June
“I’ll never let go, Jack!” Yeah, right.
Speed Sisters – 1st June
Amber Fares’ documentary about female racers in Palestine is fast, furious and heartwarming film-making.
The Fighter – 1st June
After bowing out in May, Mark Wahlberg’s sports drama bounces right back into the ring. The actor plays Micky Ward, a boxer – not a great one, but a good one. He’s the younger brother of Dicky Ecklund (Christian Bale). Dicky’s a boxer too. He once knocked down Sugar Ray. Now he spends his days smoking crack and talking to a documentary crew. The pair’s family drama, mixed with underdog sports thrills, makes for a conventional movie, but the performances (including an excellent Amy Adams) give it a massive wallop of compassion.
Requiem for a Dream – 1st June
Darren Aronofsky’s searing 2000 drama is a graphic depiction of the consequences of drug addiction.
Hibana: Spark: Season 1 – 2nd June
Netflix’s first Japanese original series is an adaptation of Hibana, the novel by Naoki Matayoshi. The novella by the comedian, Haiku poet and scriptwriter was first published in the Japanese magazine, The Literary World, as a piece of serious literature produced by a popular comedian, but attracted attention thanks to its depth and surprising story. It went on to win the 153rd Akutagawa Prize and be nominated for the 28th Mishima Prize.
Happy Valley: Season 1 – 3rd June
Doctor Who director Euros Lyn and Last Tango in Halifax’s writer Sally Wainwright teamed up to create this police drama. Sarah Lancashire stars as police sergeant Catherine Cawood, who comes face to face with the man who destroyed her family in the wake of a kidnapping. The show deals in extremes of violence ad crime, but does so with an eye for the mundane everyday life of Yorkshire; a juxtaposition that focuses on consequence as much as action, and on people as much as peril.
Watchmen – 7th June
Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Alan Moore’s iconic graphic novel is about as close as the big screen could ever get to depicting its subversive subject matter. The end result may be divisive, but it’s certainly a unique sight to behold.
Dazed and Confused – 8th June
Richard Linklater’s classic coming-of-age comedy follows a group of high school and junior high students on the last day of school in 1976.
Voltron: Legendary Defender: Season 1 – 10th June
Netflix’s reboot of the cartoon will see the 80s classic return to defend the universe against evil with the help of five intrepid kids.
It Happened One Night – 15th June
Frank Capra’s 1934 flick, which sees a spoiled heiress (Claudette Colbert) flee her controlling father, only to wind up stuck with a cynical newspaper reporter (Clark Gable). Their odd couple exchanges were not only laugh-out-loud funny and endearingly sweet, but also went on to define the romantic comedy for the whole of cinema.
Transformers: Age of Extinction – 17th June
Set four years after Dark of the Moon, the underrated fourth instalment in the heavy metal franchise sees Mark Wahlberg take starring duties from Shia LaBeouf as a single dad and inventor who makes a discovery that brings the Transformers clanking into his manor.
All Hail King Julien: Season 3 – 17th June
Netflix continues its spin-off from DreamWork Animations’ Madagascar franchise with a third run of its lemur-filled cartoon.
Orange is The New Black: Season 4 – 17th June
“Do you know the difference between pain and suffering?” asks Pennsatucky in the trailer for Orange Is the New Black’s fourth season. “Pain is always there, but suffering is a choice.”
Those words look set to come true, judging by the footage we’ve seen so far, as Jenji Kohan’s prison drama turns up the tension. There are new inmates, new guards and new desk jobs (if you’re Taystee) on the cards – and with only a limited amount of space in Litchfield, it’s about to get crowded…
Guardians of the Galaxy – 20th June
Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka… One of Marvel’s most entertaining flicks finally lands on Netflix UK.
The Fundamentals of Caring – 24th June
Fresh from closing the Sundance Film Festival in the US, this indie flick, starring Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts, follows Ben, a retired writer who becomes a caregiver after suffering a personal tragedy. After 6 weeks of training, Ben meets his first client, Trevor, a foul-mouthed 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy. One paralysed emotionally, one paralysed physically, Ben and Trevor take an impromptu road trip that teaches them the importance of hope and friendship. Netflix wasted no time in snapping this up as a global exclusive.
Dragons: Race to the Edge: Season 3 – 24th June
Hiccup and Toothless return for more airborne adventures in the third season of Netflix’s best DreamWorks spin-off.
The Diary of a Teenage Girl – 30th June
Arguably 2015’s best comic book movie adaptation, this emotionally bombastic film is a staggeringly candid story of sexual awakening.
Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants: Season 7 – 30th June
That sound you can hear is the collective sigh of parents welcoming new episodes of Dora and SpongeBob to entertain their kids during the school holidays.
