David Farnor | On 06, Jan 2024
MUBI begins the new year with a new season of beginnings, shining a light on a notable directors’ feature debuts. There’s also a showcase of Aki Kaurismäki’s cinema, suffused with empathy for the common man, and an insight into the idiosyncratic and cerebral world of British pioneer Peter Greenaway.
In the meantime, it’s your last chance to stream Brazil, Shotgun Stories and An Angel at My Table.
What’s new, coming soon and leaving soon? Read on for your monthly MUBI Digest.
This month on MUBI
Reservoir Dogs – 1st January

The Other Side of Hope – 6th January
Moving, beautiful, hilarious filmmaking from the great Finn.
Romance X – 10th January
Catherine Breillat cemented her place as a feminist visionary with this notorious and unflinching account of female bodily autonomy within patriarchal confines. Sexually unfulfilled by her partner, a young school teacher, Marie (Caroline Ducey) seeks physical intimacy by embarking on a series of increasingly extreme sexual encounters hoping to find existential fulfilment.
Suzhou River – 17th January
Along the banks of the Suzhou River, which winds precariously through Shanghai, Marda falls in love with a young woman named Moudan. When he loses her in an attempted kidnapping gone wrong, she seems to disappear into the river forever—until he meets MeiMei, a woman who happens to look exactly like her. Lou Yee’s subversive, radically personal film exposes the reality of those left behind by China’s rapid industrialisation.
Autobiographical Scene Number 6882 – 24th January
In Ruben Östlund’s short film, a 30-year-old man celebrates Midsummer’s eve together with friends on the west coast of Sweden. He makes them come and watch as he is going to jump into the sea from a very high bridge. This sharp, thrilling, and comedic social commentary explores the dynamics of groupthink and the deeply masculine need to establish superiority.
Ghost in the Shell – 13th January
Spearheading the Japanese cyberpunk movement of the 90s, Mamoru Oshii’s cult classic is set in 2029, when the world is connected by an omnipresent electronic network that has merged with every aspect of daily life. Cyborg officer, Makoto is summoned to investigate a master hacker known as the Puppet Master who is using the network to rob humans of their memories by hacking their brains.
The Draughtsman’s Contract – 26th January
Peter Greenaway’s 1982 erotic murder mystery put the indie director on the global map, not to mention soundtrack composer Michael Nyman.
