MUBI celebrates Valentine’s Day this February with a collection of love triangles and affairs, but the big date to mark is the streamer’s 17th anniversary, with the return of Esteban Sapir’s surreal and dreamlike feature La Antena (2007), the first film ever shown on MUBI. Need more to swoon over? There’s a Roberto Rossellini retrospective too.

Night of the Living Dead – 1st February

George A Romero’s zombie classic is one of the most important horror films ever made.

Adaptation – 1st February

Nicolas Cage stars opposite Nicolas Cage in Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze’s mind-blowing, meta adaptation of a book by Susan Orlean. From writer’s block and self-esteem to flowers and finding purpose in life, it’s a brilliantly silly masterpiece.

Eight Deadly Shots – 1st February

Based on real events, Mikko Niskanen’s incensed Eight Deadly Shots (1972) follows kind-hearted Pasi, a farmer played by Niskanen himself, as he struggles to provide for his wife and four children. He supplements his income with odd-jobs, including a black market moonshine gig in the woods, until a run-in with the authorities results in a tragic shootout and four dead policemen. Originally a four-episode miniseries, the condensed film spends the rest of its running time uncovering in flashback the poverty and conditions that led a man like Pasi to such a drastic and violent fit of despair.

La Antena – 14th February

Drawing inspiration from early German Expressionism and paying homage to cinematic pioneers like Murnau and Vertov, Sapir’s semi-silent film acts as an enchanting allegory about media censorship, loss of individuality and corporate control.

Jules et Jim – 9th February

Two artist best friends — the German Jules and the French Jim – love the same woman, the enigmatic and alluring Catherine. Over three decades, the love triangle’s bond will be strengthened, broken, and tested as events like the Great War take place. An iconic classic from François Truffaut for Valentine’s Day.

Thelma – 20th February

In Joachim Trier’s sapphic mystery, a young woman soon learns that the violent episodes are symptoms of an inexplicable and often dangerous set of supernatural abilities, which she must contend with while attempting to resist her feelings for her new friend.

Lick the Star – 23rd February

In Sofia Coppola’s first short film, teenage high-schooler Kate has been absent from school for a week due to a broken foot. Upon arriving, she learns her clique of friends devise a secret plan, involving arsenic, that they codename Lick the Star. This bold, incisive and stylish short foreshadows Coppola’s eerie and dark depiction of high school life in her debut The Virgin Suicides and teases her career-spanning obsession with girl group dynamics.
