What’s coming soon to Disney+ UK in August 2022?
James R | On 29, Jul 2022
Disney is wheeling out the big guns to close out the summer, with a new Predator sequel just the start of a string of franchise titles – from Star Wars series Andor and Marvel series She-Hulk to an animated LEGO Star Wars sequel to a solo outing for Baby Groot to a standalone film for Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear. And, of course, there’s the small matter of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds buying Wrexham football club. Throw in a sprinkling of sing-along editions of classics and you’ve got a reminder of the streaming service’s strength as an entertainment provider for each member of the family.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Disney+ UK in August 2022:
Lightyear – 3rd August
Ever wondered how Andy’s favourite toy came to be? From Disney and Pixar comes an animated sci-fi action-adventure — the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans). Lightyear follows the legendary space ranger on an intergalactic mission alongside ambitious recruits Izzy, Mo and Darby, and his robot companion Sox. As this motley crew embark on their toughest assignment yet, they must learn to work as a team to escape the evil Zurg – plus his dutiful robot army who are never far behind.
Prey – 5th August
Dan Trachtenberg’s new entry in the franchise is an action thriller set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago. It is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior who has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains. So when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.
LEGO Star Wars: Summer Vacation – 5th August
This new animated special is set shortly after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and features the voices of Weird Al Yankovic, Yvette Nicole Brown, Kelly Marie Tran, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams. It includes Weird Al’s new original song, Scarif Beach Party.
Bluey: Season 3, Part 1 – 10th August
Bluey is a loveable, inexhaustible six year-old Blue Heeler dog who lives with her Dad, Mum, and four year-old little sister, Bingo. Bluey’s love of fun brings her family and the whole neighbourhood into a world of daily adventures.
I Am Groot: Season 1 – 10th August
There’s no guarding the galaxy from this mischievous toddler! So get ready as Baby Groot takes centre stage in his very own collection of shorts, exploring his glory days growing up—and getting into trouble—among the stars. All five episodes arrive at once.
This Fool – 12th August
Inspired by the life and stand-up of star and co-creator Chris Estrada, This Fool is an irreverent, cinematic half-hour comedy set in working class South Los Angeles. The show centers around Julio Lopez, a 30-year-old who still lives at home, has been dating his girlfriend on and off since high school and finds any excuse to avoid dealing with his own problems. Julio works at Hugs Not Thugs, a gang rehabilitation non-profit, where he butts heads with his older cousin Luis, an ex-gang member who just got out of prison and moved in with Julio and his family.
Once Upon A Time in America (1984) – 12th August
The final film by Sergio Leone finds the maestro audaciously and ambitiously going beyond his Spaghetti Western roots for a sprawling, multi-decade New York crime epic. Robert De Niro leads a production at once resplendent and gritty—a familiar setting given operatic majesty and force by Leone. De Niro. James Woods. Leone. What more do you need?
Heat (1995) – 12th August
Michael Mann’s iconic actioner is an influential masterpiece on multiple fronts.
King of Comedy (1982) – 12th August
Robert De Niro is disturbingly cheerful in Scorsese’s twisted satire of celebrity culture.
She-Hulk: Season 1 – 17th August
In Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) — an attorney specialising in superhuman-oriented legal cases—must navigate the complicated life of a single, 30-something who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk. Episodes arrive weekly.
Welcome to Wrexham: Season 1 – 25th August
In 2020, Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) teamed up to purchase Wrexham AFC in the hopes of turning the club into an underdog story the whole world could root for. The worry? Rob and Ryan have no experience in football or working with each other. That said, they are serious about their investment in Wrexham, improving the club, and doing right by the townspeople. Founded in 1864, the “Red Dragons” are one of the oldest football teams in the world and currently compete in the National League, the fifth tier of the English football league system. From Hollywood to Wales, the pitch to the locker room, the front office to the pub, Welcome to Wrexham will track Rob and Ryan’s crash course in football club ownership and the inextricably connected fates of a team and a town counting on two actors to bring some hope and change to the club. Episodes arrive weekly.
Andor: Season 1 – Postponed until 21st September
This Rogue One prequel will follow Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make in the galaxy. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero. Episodes arrive weekly.
