Apple TV+ is stepping up its streaming game this year, with a slew of new and returning originals confirmed for spring and summer. With Ted Lasso still scoring weekly episodes, Apple is building on that winning wave with two more of its big-hitters: The Morning Show and sci-fi epic Foundation, plus a film of the musical Come from Away, a co-production with the BBC and the return of Jon Stewart…

Here’s what’s coming soon to Apple TV+ in September 2021:

9/11: Inside the President’s War Room – 1st September

Twenty years ago, at 9.03am on 11 September 2001, the second of four hijacked planes hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York. America was under attack. President George W Bush was sitting in front of seven-year-olds in a classroom in Florida. Members of the president’s security detail thought the next plane could be aimed at them.

A first draft of history and a claustrophobic clock-ticking thriller, this film tells the story of the presidency on arguably the most consequential day in recent history. How should a government deal with a large scale terrorist attack that used four commercial aircraft as missiles? How would they cope with losing their friends? And how could they respond?

This documentary (also airing on BBC One in the UK) tells the definitive story of the Bush administration through 12 hours of that momentous day, with first-hand testimony from President Bush, Vice-President Dick Cheney, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and other senior staff who had their hands on the levers of power.

Come from Away – 10th September

Experience the Broadway musical filmed live at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater. The Tony Award-winning musical tells the remarkable true story of 38 flights grounded in a small Canadian town. As the locals host these “come from aways,” they come together and find hope.

The Morning Show: Season 2 – 17th September

Starring and executive produced by Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, this searingly topical drama explores the world of morning news and the ego, ambition and the misguided search for power behind the people who help America wake up in the morning. Season 1 followed the free fall of an early morning newscast in the wake of a harassment scandal involving veteran host Mitch (Steve Carell), leading co-host Alex (Aniston) and new presenter Bradley (Witherspoon) to navigate their way through the mess. Season 2 picks up as the Morning Show team emerge from the wreckage of Alex (Aniston) and Bradley’s (Witherspoon) actions to a new UBA and a world in flux, where identity is everything and the chasm between who we present as and who we really are comes into play. Along with Aniston and Witherspoon, the star-studded returning cast includes Steve Carell, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Bel Powley, Desean Terry, Janina Gavankar, Tom Irwin and Marcia Gay Harden.

Doug Unplugs: Season 2 – 17th September

Hailing from DreamWorks Animation and based on Dan Yaccarino’s books, Doug Unplugs follows a young robot named Doug who senses there’s more to life than just the facts. While other robots plug in for their daily download, curious Doug unplugs and journeys into the human world, and with his best friend Emma, experiences its wonders firsthand. The voice cast includes Brandon James Cienfuegos, Kyrie McAlpin, Eric Bauza, Mae Whitman, Leslie David Baker and Becky Robinson.

Foundation: Season 1 – 24th September

From showrunner and executive producer David S Goyer (Batman Begins), this adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s sci-fi follows the revolutionary Dr Hari Seldon, who predicts the impending fall of the Empire, leading him and a band of loyal followers to venture to the far reaches of the galaxy to establish The Foundation in an attempt to rebuild and preserve the future of civilisation. Enraged by Hari’s claims, the ruling Cleons — a long line of emperor clones — fear their grasp on the galaxy may be weakening as they’re forced to reckon with the potential reality of losing their legacy forever. The 10-episode first season has lined up an impressive cast, including Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey and Alfred Enoch. You can see them in action when the series premieres on 24th September, with the first three episodes arriving at once, followed by new episodes weekly on Fridays.

The Problem with Jon Stewart – Date TBC

Jon Stewart will return to our TV screens for a new current affairs series – the first time he’s back on our screens properly since his 20-time Emmy Award-winning run on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart came to a close in 2015. The Problem with Jon Stewart is a one-hour series which will explore a single different topic in each episode, each one currently part of the national conversation and his advocacy work. Each season of the series will be further explored in a companion podcast to continue the discussion.
