The Boys: Season 2 – 4th September
Amazon’s dark superhero saga returns for a second season, which finds The Boys on the run from the law, hunted by the Supes, and desperately trying to regroup and fight back against Vought. In hiding, Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) try to adjust to a new normal, with Butcher (Karl Urban) nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) must navigate her place in The Seven as Homelander (Antony Starr) sets his sights on taking complete control. His power is threatened with the addition of Stormfront (Aya Cash), a social media-savvy new Supe, who has an agenda of her own.
Bend it like Beckham – 5th September
Gurinder Chadha’s coming-of-age comedy about a girl who rebels against her traditional family to join a football team is a modern classic, with Parminder Nagra leading an excellent young cast that includes Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Keira Knightley.
STARZPLAY: Power Book II: Ghost – 6th September
Power Book II: Ghost will pick up where the original series leaves off, starring Mary J. Blige, Cliff “Method Man” Smith as defence lawyer Davis MacLean and several members of the original Power cast. Blige is front and centre of the new teaser, reprising her role as queenpin Monet Stewart Tejada, alongside other familiar faces (including Michael Rainey Jr as Tariq). A STARZPLAY subscription is available for £4.99 a month through Amazon Prime Video Channels.)
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – 6th September
It ain’t really Jumanji, but this raucous romp is an entertaining sequel in its own right.
Gladiator – 8th September
Ridley Scott’s historical epic, starring Russell Crowe, is as good now as it was the year it was first released.
Bombshell – 11th September
Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie star in this drama directed by Jay Roach. Based on true events, the film focuses on the female journalists at Fox News who came forward with sexual harassment allegations against the company’s CEO Roger Ailes (John Lithgow).
War of the Worlds – 12th September
Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of H. G. Wells’ classic novel divided audiences, but for those happy to see Tom Cruise running from aliens hidden in the ground, this is a gripping thriller. Worth watching for a cameo from Tim Robbins and a sequence in the woods, where the ash of dead people falls through trees like snow – Spielberg hasn’t dared to be this dark in years.
Ici c’est Paris, 50 ans de passion – 15th September
Amazon continues its investment in sporting series with a new documentary about French football club Paris Saint-Germain. Episode 1 – “Tout près des étoiles” (Close to the stars) – gives viewers behind-the-scenes access during Paris Saint-Germain’s 2020 run for the greatest title in European football. The episode will feature never-before-seen footage of how the players, coach, president and staff lived through this adventure during a unique and unexpected season. The three remaining episodes will be released in 2021.
The Gentlemen – 18th September
Guy Ritchie knowing and occasionally dubious return to the gangster genre is a worryingly entertaining ride.
Utopia: Season 1 – 25th September
The eight-part conspiracy thriller, based on Dennis Kelly’s Channel 4 series, is written by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects). It centres on a group of comic fans who meet online and bond over their obsession of a seemingly fictional comic called Utopia. Together, Becky (Ashleigh LaThrop), Ian (Dan Byrd), Samantha (Jessica Rothe), Wilson Wilson (Desmin Borges) and Grant (Javon “Wanna” Walton) unearth hidden meanings cloaked within the pages of Utopia, predicting threats to humanity. They realise these are not just the makings of a conspiracy; they are very real dangers coming alive right now in their world. The group embarks on a high-stakes adventure, bringing them face-to-face with the comic’s famed central character, Jessica Hyde.
