What’s coming soon to Amazon Prime Video UK in May 2020?
David Farnor | On 29, Apr 2020
One of Amazon’s most acclaimed original series returns this month, with Homecoming back for a second season – with a brand new lead star in the form of Janelle Monae. It joins another sci-fi series, Upload, the new comedy from The Office creator Greg Daniels (who also has Space Force arriving on Netflix a few weeks later).
With a new stand-up special and a documentary dream for Narcos fans, Amazon’s homegrown content is attention-grabbing enough, but its deal with Warner Bros is the icing on the cake, with Mad Max: Fury Road, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and The Lord of the Rings also on the way.

The Lord of the Rings – 1st May
There’s no better time than the current lockdown to journey across Middle-earth and relive Peter Jackson’s epic adaptation of Tolkien’s seminal fantasy novels. All three films arrive on the same day.
Upload: Season 1 – 1st May
Greg Daniels’ new sci-fi comedy is set in a technologically advanced future where hologram phones, 3D food printers and automated grocery stores are the norm. Most uniquely, humans can choose to be “uploaded” into a virtual afterlife when they find themselves near-death. The series follows a young app developer, Nathan Brown (Robbie Amell), who winds up in the hospital following a self-driving car accident, needing to quickly decide his fate.
Jimmy O. Yang: Good Deal – 8th May
Performed live at the Neptune Theater in Seattle, Jimmy O. Yang: Good Deal covers Jimmy’s hilarious interactions with fans, his thoughts on Matt Damon, and whether ghosts will haunt one-bedroom apartments.
The Last Narc: Season 1 – 15th May
Former cartel insiders divulge the bone-chilling details behind the notorious murder and kidnapping of DEA Agent “Kiki” Camarena in this new documentary series. Through never before seen interviews, this four-part docuseries will unravel the story of Camarena, the drug cartel he infiltrated, and the narc who risked everything to discover the truth.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: Season 1 to 6 – 18th May
If you’ve always wanted to catch up on Marvel’s small-screen spin-off – and you don’t have Disney+ – this is your chance.
Homecoming: Season 2 – 22nd May
Amazon’s sci-fi thriller returns to delve into a fresh new mystery, with Janelle Monae taking over from Julia Roberts. Her character wakes in a rowboat adrift a lake, with no memory of how she got there — or even who she is. Her ensuing search for identity will lead her into the heart of the Geist Group, the unconventional wellness company behind the Homecoming Initiative.
Ready Player One – 1st May
Steven Spielberg’s dazzling sci-fi romp. Tye Sheridan stars as Wade Watts, a lonely slum-dwelling teen who takes the fight to the money-hungry suits out to turn the Oasis – an immersive VR fantasyland created by oddball genius James Halliday (Mark Rylance) – into a soulless advertising tool. Together Wade and a group of likeminded underdogs, including Olivia Cooke’s Samantha, must use their in-game avatars to complete three challenges before chief wrong’un Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) beats them to it.
American Psycho – 4th May
Director Mary Harron’s stylish and side-splitting adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel showcases Christian Bale’s unnerving performance and some of the scariest pop tunes of the decade.
Ocean’s Trilogy – 7th May
Steven Soderbergh, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and more are clearly having a ball in 2001’s hugely entertaining heist remake, which spawned two further sequels.
Mad Max: Fury Road – 24th May
George Miller’s latest entry in the Mad Max series sees Tom Hardy take over Mel Gibson’s role, but its success lies in another character entirely: Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, who leads a string of female prisoners in an escape attempt from their sinister overlord, Immortan Joe. Full of practical stunts, dazzling visuals and burning with a feminist message, this is fantastic, eye-boggling stuff.
Passengers – 24th May
As the corporate starship Avalon ploughs through space with 5,000 hibernating settlers on board, engineer Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) finds himself erroneously awoken early from hypersleep – 90 years before the ship reaches its destination. After months alone, he makes the decision to wake up beautiful fellow passenger Aurora Lane (Jennifer Lawrence)…
Sherlock Holmes – 30th May
Guy Ritchie’s jaunty take on Sherlock Holmes is sleuthing fun for the 21st century.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – 30th May
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law reprise their roles as Holmes and Watson in Guy Ritchie’s sequel, but the show is stolen by Mad Men’s Jared Harris as the menacing Moriarty – the perfect antidote for anyone who isn’t keen on Andrew Scott’s villain in the BBC series.
