David Farnor | On 29, May 2021
It’s a quieter month on Amazon Prime Video this June, but quality is being prioritised over quantity, with one of the best films of last year arriving, along with some blockbuster spectacle. Otherwise, it just means more time to slowly work through Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Amazon Prime Video UK in June 2021:
Dom: Season 1 – 4th June
Dom tells the story of Pedro, a handsome boy from Rio de Janeiro’s middle class who is introduced to cocaine in his teen years, putting him on the path to becoming the leader of a criminal gang that dominated the tabloids in Rio in the early 2000s: Pedro Dom. Shifting between action, adventure and drama, Dom also follows Pedro’s father Victor Dantas, who as a teenager, makes a discovery at the bottom of the sea, reports it to the authorities and ends up joining the police intelligence service. The series shows the journey of father and son living opposite lives, often mirroring and complementing each other, while both confront situations which blur the lines between right and wrong.
Mother! – 1st June
From writer-director Darren Aronofsky comes a paranoid, blackly comic nightmare. Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence play an unnamed husband and wife living in an enormous, octagonal house smack bang in the middle of nowhere. Her days are consumed with the redecorating work needed after a terrible fire, while he – a celebrated author – struggles unsuccessfully to overcome a paralysing case of writer’s block. Then there’s a late-in-thenight knock at the door and a mysterious stranger (Ed Harris) and his glamorous wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) usher in ever-escalating chaos…
Saint Maud – 1st June
Morfydd Clark is mesmerising in this intensely unsettling psychological thriller from debut director Rose Glass.
Godzilla: King of Monsters – 18th June
This majestically directed monster movie sequel is stuffed with awe-inspiring spectacle.
Bosch: Season 7 – 25th June
Based on Michael Connelly’s best-selling novels, Amazon’s longest-running original drama returns for its final season, as Titus Welliver’s Detective Harry Bosch stands trial for the shooting of a murder suspect. A cold case involving the remains of a missing boy forces Bosch to confront his past. As daring recruit, Julia Brasher (Annie Wersching), catches his eye, and departmental politics heat up, Bosch will pursue justice at all costs.
