Amazon is getting warmed up for the new season of Premier League football this summer, with not only the debut of its new weekly talk show – hosted by Peter Crouch – but also the arrival of two sports documentaries, one about football in general and another about German club Borussia Dortmund.
But it’s not all games, with criminal doc Free Meek also on the way, alongside political drama Loro. But the month’s big hitter is Carnival Row, a new fantasy epic starring Orlando Bloom.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Amazon Prime Video UK in August 2019:
This Is Football: Season 1 – 2nd August
This Is Football unpacks the unique phenomenon that grips and unifies billions of people from every corner of the globe. Across the episodes universal themes of the human experience are explored: Redemption – football’s uplifting role in rebuilding the soul of Rwanda after the genocide, Belief – the inspirational rise of women’s football and two teams who gave everything to make it happen, Chance – the agony and the ecstasy of the fates that humble champions and keep every fan believing in the impossible, Love – four stories from every corner of the earth where the love of the game transcends adversity, Pride – how Iceland’s football Vikings take on the world and give every underdog hope, and Wonder – unlocking the secrets of Lionel Messi’s genius and the global delight of watching him play.
Preacher: Season 4
AMC’s unique adaptation of the graphic novels returns for a fourth and final season of mayhem, laughs and violence. Season 4 picks up as Jesse is rocked by visions of an apocalyptic future, while he and Tulip prepare for an all-out assault on Masada, where Cassidy – trapped to a torturous fate – struggles to hang on. But Starr and his Grail operatives are ready for them…
Ocean’s Eleven – 6th August
Steven Soderbergh, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and more are clearly having a ball in this hugely entertaining heist remake – joined by the second two entries in the trilogy, available to stream from the same day.
Free Meek – 9th August
Amazon’s new documentary follows Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill, who was arrested in 2017 for probation violations, sparking outrage. A re-investigation of his original case explores allegations of police corruption as Meek becomes the face of a justice reform movement. The five-episode series chronicles Mill’s fight for exoneration while exposing the broader flaws of the U.S. criminal justice system.
Back of the Net: Season 1 – 13th August
As Amazon prepares to start streaming Premier League football matches later this year, it paves the way with this new weekly talk show, which sees footballer Peter Crouch, comedian John Bishop and broadcaster Gabby Logan look back at the latest matches and forward to the next, with debate on the big talking points and a few guests and games along the way.
Inside Borussia Dortmund – 16th August
Amazon is doubling down on its footballing game this month with yet another sports documentary. It follows one of the most exciting seasons in Borussia Dortmund’s recent history, charting the team’s battle for the German championship right up to the very last day of the season, giving us a behind-the-scenes, unvarnished look at the country’s leading club.
Loro – 24th August
Paolo Sorrentino teams up once again with longtime collaborator Toni Servillo to reveal the scandalous and, until now, unseen private life of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Carnival Row: Season 1 – 30th August
Amazon’s ambitious new fantasy series is set in a Victorian world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. This growing population struggles to coexist with humans – forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate (Orlando Bloom), and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne) rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society.
