Top 7 movies about obsession

Obsession. While it’s not a great idea in a healthy relationship, there can be no doubt it makes for some compelling screen time. If you live for the digital drama, and love a healthy hit of this unhealthy escalation of love, this is the list for you. We dive into 7 movies that bring that tingling on screen allure of dangerous infatuation with others.
Gone Girl
This rather spiffy onscreen adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel was a compelling hit for a reason. Wear your seatbelts, because this one is packed with intriguing twists and turns. It also has a stellar cast who get deeply invested in their flawed, but fascinating, characters. There’s a reason this one saw Rosamund Pike get an Oscar nomination, and the ending… well, we won’t spoil it for you, but you’re sure to be satisfied.
Sleeping with the Enemy
America perhaps didn’t expect much of Julia Roberts after her iconic role in Pretty Woman, but this film managed to upset the apple cart completely. Playing a wife forced to flee for her life, the main character, Laura, is so terrified her estranged husband’s infatuation will kill her she fakes her own death. The unfolding of this plot makes for epic screen time, so be sure to cue this one up for watching.
The Crush
Another oldie-but-goldie, this one explores obsession in the pre-teen mind. A 14-year-old takes a seemingly standard crush to dangerous new heights with a psychotic obsession in a blend that’s a little scary and a little creepy.
Can’t Hardly Wait
You might be surprised to see this one on the list. While it’s not a thriller, it brings the idea of obsession to life in a journey that’s hard to watch, but leaves you thinking. A stereotypical nice, but forgotten, highschooler is obsessed with the school’s most popular girl. While he displays all the signs of a standard stalker, it somehow is interpreted as wonderful by his crush. It’s a look at a trap some might fall into in their highschool years.
Single White Female
No list about obsession would be complete without this one. A sweet, unsuspecting woman thinks she’s found the perfect roommate, while she’s really just unleashed a beast to plague her. So obsessed with her that she ends up impersonating her and trying to break up her relationship, you can try another take on this story with The Roommate instead.
The Perfect Guy
No one is perfect, but some people sure are good at pretending they are. With a smouldering performance from Michael Ealy, this is a fascinating look at aggressive, unfettered possessiveness at its worst. Those in the know will notice a trendy piece of royalty-free music you’ll recognize embedded in this one, too.
Fatal Attraction
Possibly the genre-definer for obsession, this Best Picture nominee is still beloved by critics and fans alike for a reason. A passionate weekend affair turns into a psychotic marathon of obsessions and one of cinema’s most memorable (if terrifying) scenes.
