“There’s something profoundly wrong here.” Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things arrives on Netflix this September, and a new trailer gives us a first look at the film’s mind-bending weirdness.
Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Iain Reid, it a young woman (Jessie Buckley) who takes a road trip with her new boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to his family farm, despite her second thoughts about their relationship. Trapped at the farm during a snowstorm with Jake’s mother (Toni Collette) and father (David Thewlis), she begins to question the nature of everything she knew or understood about her boyfriend, herself, and the world.

Charlie Kaufman is heading to Netflix this autumn with his new film I’m Thinking of Ending Things – and we’ve got our first look at the star-studded movie in action.
Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Iain Reid, it follows Jake and his girlfriend on a road trip to meet his parents on their secluded farm. She is thinking of ending things. When Jake makes an unexpected detour, though, leaving her stranded, a twisted mix of palpable tension, psychological frailty, and sheer terror ensues.
The cast includes Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, Toni Collette and David Thewlis. You can see them in action on 4th September on Netflix – and, before then, you can see them in these new stills:

Charlie Kaufman officially heads to Netflix this September, with the streaming confirming the release date for his new film, I’m Thinking of Ending Things.
Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Iain Reid, it follows Jake and his girlfriend on a road trip to meet his parents on their secluded farm. She is thinking of ending things. When Jake makes an unexpected detour, though, leaving her stranded, a twisted mix of palpable tension, psychological frailty, and sheer terror ensues.
Adapted by the Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine helmer, the result is already a cinephile’s dream, but it becomes even more so when you notice the cast list: the movie stars Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, Toni Collette and David Thewlis.
You can see the end result – an exploration of regret, longing and the fragility of the human spirit – on Netflix worldwide on 4th September.

Jesse Plemons, Jessie Buckley and Toni Colette will star in I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Netflix’s new film from Charlie Kaufman.
Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Iain Reid, and with the Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine director at the helm, the movie has already been one of the most-anticipated upcoming projects among cinephiles, but now, that anticipation just stepped up a notch with an equally impressive amount of talent in front of the camera.
Jesse Plemons (Vice, The Post), Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose, Beast), Toni Collette (Velvet Buzzsaw, Hereditary) and David Thewlis (Anomalisa, Wonder Woman) will all star in the film. It follows Jake and his girlfriend on a road trip to meet his parents on their secluded farm. She is thinking of ending things. When Jake makes an unexpected detour, though, leaving her stranded, a twisted mix of palpable tension, psychological frailty, and sheer terror ensues.
Kaufman is writing and directing, and principal photograph is now underway.
Charlie Kaufman adapts I’m Thinking of Ending Things for Netflix

Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Anomalisa, and Synecdoche, New York) is set to write and direct a film adaptation of Iain Reid’s internationally best sellingnovel I’m Thinking of Ending Things for Netflix.
Named an NPR Best Book of the Year in 2016, I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a stunning debut that examines the fragility of the psyche and the limitations of solitude. On a road trip to meet his parents on their secluded farm, Jake’s girlfriend is thinking of ending things. When Jake makes an unexpected detour, leaving her stranded, a twisted mix of palpable tension, psychological frailty, and sheer terror ensues.
Scott Stuber, head of Netflix’s film group, said: “Charlie is a singular talent with a formidable artistic vision. He has the rare ability to tell unique stories in a universal way. I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a chilling thriller and we can’t wait to share Charlie’s adaptation with audiences everywhere.”
The film is a Likely Story production. Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman (Private Life, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Foxcatcher) and Stefanie Azpiazu (The Land of Steady Habits, Enough Said) are producing along with Kaufman. Reid will serve as co-producer.
This new project reunites Kaufman with his frequent collaborator Bregman, who previously produced Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Synecdoche, New York, and Human Nature.
